Full Face Prosthetic Help! :\

This is a question I'm not POSITIVE on BUT when I do it, I just use the pax without a pros-aide layer (I'm pretty sure the principals of the pax and pros-aide are the same in this case), THEN powder, THEN AA makeup... ptgreek, correct me if I'm wrong?

I do it the exact same way as you do B89 ..I know when painting masks, folks like to paint on prosaide first...but honestly, if you PAX base coat ..its pretty much the same thing. Once you get that base down...you can detail paint some more ..then blend with your alcohol palettes once applied ..translucent powder will finish the whole thing ..make it look less painted and more natural

Alright Gentlemen! Thanks for all your help so far! I did a couple layers on my prosthetic but it came out a little dark for my taste. It's a good base color (especially in the creases) but the overall is not the right shade at all. The PAX ended up drying a way darker green color than what it said. So... now my dilemma, do I powder it and try and lighten it up with the AA makeup? or do I mix myself some PAX using pro-said and acrylic paint and do a light layer of yellow or beige-ish over it so it can hit the hicher areas like cheeks and forehead and such? I'm thinking mix some PAX and hit it again (lightly) to just lighten the initial shade of green. Any thoughts?

I would say this could work to your advantage. I'd mix up some more pax to a lighter green (and test it, once you mix it, dab a little on your hand or something and rub it to make it dry faster and check the color.) Once you get a good, lighter color you can water it down and do several thin washes of color over the dark one, lightening it AND adding depth and dimension to the piece, THEN powder again, THEN add some spatter of some other greens, browns, maybe some yellow alcohol makeup then a final light powder. Should be pretty effective! Post pics of the process!

I tend to as if you leave each coat to dry and let it sit you run the risk of dirt and stuff sticking to it or worse, it sticking to itself... We had this problem at a haunted house as someone else started some of the pieces and had no idea what they were doing... we lost that piece. I would say it depends on how much you do in one sitting... I'd give it a light powder whenever your done painting for the day...

Hmm... good to know. I did notice some sticking as it was drying last night and pulled those areas back apart... it seemed to be ok so far... I quess I got lucky. I'll definitely give it a powdering then when I get home and between coats.

You can be very light with the powder, brush off as much as you can with a powder brush. And you can check the tack with your finger. If it still sticks at all add a little more powder, just don't over do it. The only downside is a little bit of a color fade which can be fixed with a damp paper towel but why go that far if you don't need to...? I still want to see pictures!

here here for those pics! ...also ..are you pinning it down to a face form? ..or is it on vac shell of a face? ..either one can and will help the painting process ..keeping those edges down so none of the foam curls and sticks to itself

As for the color, the layering worked AMAZINGLY WELL!!! Having that darker base cote was the way to go! As for the edges...not so well. Unfortunately, I didn't even think to use a head form of any kind. That coupled with the fact that I didn't powder the thing the first night of painting did cause the edges to come up a little bit. The overall painting thickened them up a bit as well... I did get some thickening powder which I was told I could thicken the pros-aid up with so I can kind of taper down on the edges and blend to my face after it's glued down. (if that makes sense). As fo pictures, I am HORRIBLE about documenting, but I will try and start from this point. I have pretty much most of the painting done on the prosthetic but I need to add some a little bit more shading and some purple and brown freckling (which I might not even do). It's kind of a surprise for a party I'm going to so I need to keep it on the DL until this weekend. But you better believe I'll be posting some pics once I am able. I'd like to say more to get some more "specific" advice, but you guys have been awesome! I'd love to meet you guys in person sometime an learn some more about the techniques and life casting and so on. Since we're all in the neighborhood. ;)

Agreed, it'd be fun to meet up. Can't wait to see this piece. The problem with the thickened edges is probably because you painted all the way TO the edge. Somewhere Earlier I said to avoid this for this reason. The very last, say 1/4 inch of the edge gets colored AFTER it's applied and is then blended to the skin. You'll need to thicken the pros-aide now with the cabo and use it as a filler. No big, just takes a little more time.

Yeah, thinking back, I do remember that... not sure what I was thinking. I suppose I got on a roll painting it and didn't realize til it was near done and I was inspecting it. Well, hopefully I can still blend it as seamless as possible. I have a reputation to uphold! Another reason I'd like to do a life cast master and make a few molds of my face and head. I'd like to do a sculpt of my own and try my hand at this monster magic stuffs... Perhaps I should also at least pick up one of those wig heads from sally's to keep it on...

At least you are learning, and having fun with it ..thats the most important thing ..and Im sure you will have a nice piece when finished . Im all for meeting up. B89 ..sounds like you and I probably share some common friends if not shared co-workers from time to time as well.

Just a little update... the makeup was a complete success for a first try! I was soooo happy with the way everything turned out! The Grinch was the life of the party! 4 hourse of makeup and about an hour and a half of removal time and every minute was worth it. I'll try and get some pics up tonight. Thank you so much ptgreek and b89 for all of your help!

Thanks for all your help guys. I really appreciate it! It was a blast doing it and I would definitely like to get into doing some more in depth stuff. Including making my own Grinch prosthetic. Along with some other ideas. I found that I have no problem gluing stuff to my face. Lol!
