Found!!! Obi ANH 'Gear'!!!

Serafino,

is that a Chen grenade you have everything attached to? If so SOMEBODY SHIP HIM A REAL GRENADE.

for pictures of the second time these real parts have ever been together. (the first being the real prop of course)

Nice work KD and Serafino.

Yeah that would be fun. I'd ship it back--I don't want an inaccurate grenade, blech. :p

Ok, first off, a HUGE thank you to Killdozer for making this possible (by which I mean he put me on this contact..)  His constant search for this part turned up some very unusual options, so it is very appropriate that he should be the one to discover this part.  For me, coming on the heels of receiving the emitter the whole thing's just unreal, I am in shock, utterly dumbfounded at my luck to now own one of these parts.  My thanks also to another RPFer who cooperated with us in resolving a double contact situation.  He's being a real gentleman about it and I'm very grateful to him for that.

Here's the killer--the long threaded extension is a PERFECT tight fit in the handwheel.  Just spread some epoxy on that thing and push it in there and you'd get just the sort of gloppy effect from squeezed out glue, cleaned up with a rag, as seen on the prop.

But that's not all--the other part, with holes in it?  That is a PERFECT fit inside the clamp.  :lol  The whole thing is just PERFECT..  Oh, and yes that's one of my modified Roman gears.  Roman--note the correct bloody length..  :angry  :lol

So here it is, all assembled (roughly, forgive the rotten alignment):  :eek

....and the closeup.  (no time to redo the photography I'm afraid...):

Fantastic work fellas...to all of you that did all the legwork.

That is one incredible looking saber Andres.

But now that it's all found...what are you left to do? :confused

I'm sure the journey was just as fun as reaching the destination. :D

Now breath that heavy sigh of relief.

Hey Shinoby : That's a great saber you have here ...
But unfortunately....there is no update possible I think
:lol :lol :lol

I just got a bead on an entire booster/hider assembly. Transaction is in the works, but no photos until parts arrive. Seller claims they're in good condition, but he'd be happy to re-parkerize them for free before shipping. What do you guys think: buy as-is or refinished?

As is IMO

Others have privately echoed the same sentiments, actually, so as-is it is. :)

I'll be receiving it first in order to take scaled photos and caliper measurements, and then it's off to its new owner... I'll let him decide if he wants to post his identity before he actually gets it back from me.

Let's see... guess I might as well... Of COURSE I'll post pics. :p

Leave it as is. I think if it were re-parkerized, the color would be way off. In my experience, new parkerizing is a dark grey color. I much prefer the richness of a well oiled vintage gun part. A nice deep brown/black color. That being said, if the part is all rust and scratched and he will re-parkerize for free, go for it. I take it if this turns out to be the correct part, you will be taking accurate dimensions and possibly doing a run of these or helping someone do a run? Good luck with your purchase, I really hope it is the correct one. You are a lucky guy.

Thanks. :)

I'm really not interested in keeping an original for myself. The new owner was gracious enough to lend me his since my private inquiries led him to a source. I'm just grateful for an opportunity to be playing a modest part in these historic discoveries and would love to help in any way I can (documentation, CAD, accurate replicas, etc.).

At least we're all lucky in the sense that this isn't nearly as rare as the German MG81 booster/hider on Han Solo's blaster, so I'm sure more will eventually turn up and there's a good chance even an unused mint part might surface. To date, only one of the MG81 booster/flash hiders has been located in good condition and I'm fortunate enough to be receiving it soon on loan to photograph and measure for the purpose of making accurate replicas.

After I'm done with these two, I hope to help out on the emitter, handwheel, and grenade too. :)
