Fortnite Red Knight - Halloween Costume for my 8yr old w lots of pics!

My 8yr old wants to be the Red Knight from Fortnite (despite the fact that she's never played the game). :lol

I'm starting off with by building her helmet in (mostly) 6mm EVA foam. Here is the back of the helmet on my daughter.

Then I glued on the crest (Mohawk) along the top of the helm. I used thicker floor mats foam for that (sandwiched together with the smooth sides out and cut to size).

Then I built out the faceplate.

I also had to add the edge detail, which is just a simple cut on the back side and then forcing that slice open with hotglue to make a flared edge.

That results in a cool look that matches the design of the character.

The final pieces are decorations on the faceplate and helm. I used foam for these as well, but I used two different tools. For the smaller beveled shapes I did them by hand with an Xacto knife. For the larger piece on the front of the faceplate, I used my ban saw. (the wire you see is just to hold the pieces in place while I was taking pics)

I'm just now catching up after Halloween, and I wanted to finish up documenting this build.

First thing I'll mention is the complete mess my first coat of plasti-dip made on the helmet. I've never had this happen before (or since), so I don't have any clear answers as to what exactly happened... but to be completely transparent, this sucked.

I decided, due to time issues, to just finish the helmet and lean into the fact that it sorta looks like cast iron. I know, that's weak... but I didn't have time to build another helmet.

My only hope was that my heavy weathering of the helmet would mask most of this ugliness. Here is a pic of the weathering during our first post-painting test fit.

And here it is with the black mesh covering the eye-slot and red LED lights for the eyes.

NOTE: I'm a huge fan of my silver Rub-n-Buff. It's a great way to give distressed pieces a great feeling of real-world wear and tear.

I then moved on to a bit of sewing. In order to allow my kiddo to do all the Fortnite dances, I needed to make her torso armor out of fabric. I did that with some cheap cotton fabric and a quick template made from paper and tape.

To quickly do the trim at the bottom, I used black fabric paint to seal the edges and give it a finished look.

I then added belt loops and belt.

To complete the costume, I built the other armor pieces:

Left Leg Armor:

Wrist Armor (with lighted display):

Chest Armor (and shoulder armor):

I also, made a shirt with netting painted silver (to replicate chainmaille), some arm and leg straps and a couple other small touches. Including her Shield:

Here is the final test fit!

And here is a look at her and her brother (who also went as a Fortnite character this year, Raven).

They even won a Judge's Award a local convention this Halloween!

And HERE is a quick video of their Fortnite dance on stage, after their win. lol

I went VERY simple. Just a battery pack and two red LEDs.

Then I just hot glued them in place. I'm just holding them in place in this pic... after they were glued, I added black see-thru cloth to mask her eyes.
