I decided to begin costuming with the "easy" character of Forbush Man. Decided to construct the helmet out of pink foam. My impatience has aided in the numerous mistakes made:
Circles- Instead of shaping later, utilized a box cutter in an attempt to cut the multiple circles out by hand. This had led to very uneven build.
Sealing- Read up on how to seal the foam, though I still found a way to mess it up a bit. Didn't put enough paint on the top of the helmet before seeing how the spray paint would look, and utilized joint compound in an attempt to smooth things out. As you can see, that didn't work out so well.
So, not giving up, have decided to go with a battle damaged helmet. Plan on sanding it as best as I can, and utilizing the dents and cracks. However, being a complete newbie on the matter, I am seeking help on methods. First, after sanding, is there some sort of clear coat that I should use to better stabilize that joint compound? Also, I read that using black acryllic paint with a washclothe will add an aged look to a silver spray paint. However, is there a good method to add a rusty look as well? I have decided researching is one thing, but seeking advice is much better.
