For all you pirates out there. My cannon

I thought i'd share my pirate cannon with my friends at the RPF. I made this a couple of years ago for when I gave out candy at the mall on Halloween for my store. I worked at Harry and David and we always had hoardes of kids. This was back when POTC was all the rage so I dressed up as Captain Wiggles. +2 internets to whomever gets the reference.

Naturally I couldn't be content with just standing and handing candy, I need moar! So I came up with this cannon. I saw other similar ones and decided to have a go at it. Here it is brand spanking new straight off a galleon.

I used cherry for the frame along with some brackets to hold it all together. The main body is a bunch of PVC pipe bits and a door handle for the rear end. Ropes and chains finish it off. Not too shabby if I do say so myself.

Now I live in an ever so loving HOA :rolleyes
needless to say my Pirate Cannon found a home in my front flower garden along with my "special" garden gnomes. I thought of you guys and decided to show you some pictures of the same cannon in it's current state. Nothing like a bit of natural weathering to finish it off!

It's extremely easy to build, hope you guys enjoy and get some inspiration!

thanks!
here's a pic of it in action. I couldn't tell you how much fun I had during Halloween night at the mall.

Do you have a parts list for the barrel ?

I built a few ( not as good as yours..though ) and had a devil of a time keeping the paint on the pvc after awhile outdoors.

Great looking cannon, especially after it got weathered up!

Captain Wiggles reference = Davy Jones with his wiggling facial prosthetics? :confused?

wes r got it right, lol.

I can scrounge up a parts list later on if you guys want. I remember when building this that I was cursing myself for using Cherry. Had a helluva time cutting it properly, considering all I had was a handsaw.

I painted this with a regular ol rattle can. I gave it at least 4 coats if I remember correctly. Followed along with several coats of clear to seal it. I do remember before painting that I was obsessed with getting rid of any shiny sheen to the pipe. A good ol rub down with sand paper, 200 grit I think.

Oh and the wood was a standard stock from Lowes, nothing fancy.

Here's a quick diagram I did of the barrel body; showing the basics of what parts I used. Really all i did was go to Home Depot and had at it. Depending on the wood you get, this should be around $30-$40 project.

Also, I remembered I used a rattle can that had like a hammered steel texture to it. You can barely see it in the photos but it's still there after all these years.

Looking at the pictures again, I remember that the Home Depot I went to had the PVC tubing already precut so i didn't have to cut the larger and smaller tubes.

I recall sanding an anchor to make it look old , rusty and roughed..I guess I should have applied the same principle to my cannons... thanks !

I saved the pic..I think we might be doing a new attraction for our haunt this year and we'll be able to pirate theme it again. I want to build a whole new ship facade with many cannons for it.. ;D

It you put some baking powder in the cannon, and put some sort of pressure mechanism (ie. Nerf), it should make a very cool looking show. (without any danger or noise)

Just a thought.

Love the cannon-- it's what everyone needs in their front yard--
It is a great way to ward of pesky sales people -- haa --

great job I like it--

check out my threads -- I have a Pirates of the C -- POTC build you may possibly like

Nicely done! Love the rope and pulley on the side too. Beautiful work on the frame! Any plans to do one of the triple cannons from the Flying Dutchman? You could give kids cavities before they'd even digested the candy :love
