Flying HK, scratch built paper model.

Hey guys I thought you might like to see one of the props I am working on. This is a model I'm making for a fan film we are working on. The plan is to make it quick and dirty out of paper and them make molds from it so I can run off a bunch of these. The reason we need a bunch is I want to blow some of these up. So even if I only make three total it would still be easier to make a mold than build three from scratch. That is the plan anyway. Remains to be seen if we can pull it off... LOL

As you can see from the pics I'm not going for a 100% screen accurate. This is just for a fan film after all so I am simplifying the details to make it an easier build. The HKs will honestly just be background objects anyway so I don't think it will matter, but I do plan to keep the hero model for myself. :)

Pretty big, maybe 28-30 inches.

I remember building the kit of this, really great design. I can't believe you made it out of paper, that's sweet!

Wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. The HK has a lot of odd lines to reproduce. Before the film is over I'll have to build a HK tank, ED209, full size Aliens and Terminators, and an entire (miniature) Alien nest inside and out complete with Queen and egg chamber.

I'm never going to finish!:cry

edit: Oh and I forgot, Hadleys Hope exterior.

lol. Did you get the patterns off the net. I know there is one that has been posted on here with a ton of aliens paper models. I'd love a Ed 209 paper model.

No I just eye-balled it. The ED209 is going to be a combat model so again it won't be screen accurate. Should make it easier to build. It will be a stop motion puppet about 2 foot high.

edit: I posted this in another thread but you can see the Terminator I am also scratch building for the film... That was sculpted in clay, molded and cast... I'm not a sculptor so you can see how rough it is...

The tail fins will have LED running lights after I cast everything. A few more pics. I have a lot of detail left to add.

Space 1999 actually used photograph cutouts of the Eagles sometimes. Especially to blow up.

Even in the Terminator, the HK had a photograph of the engines in a few shots.

I don't know what your reference material is (other than the films themselves), but here's some "Behind the Scenes" making-of material that could be helpful:

The Terminator Making of (I recommend the whole thing, but Part 2 has an initial setup about the effects, Part 4 covers Winston's work and Part 5 covers some of the miniature effects):
Part 1: YouTube - [The Terminator] [1984] [Making Of] [2001] [V] [1/6]

Wow thanks for that. gotta love youtube right? Part 5 is really good shows all kinda of tricks we can use.

Yeah. In fact, for The Terminator and the Aliens miniature effects links, I actually own the DVDs they came from. They show an artform that many modern filmmakers have almost forgotten.

BTW, I think that Hot Toyz did an ED-209 toy. I could be wrong, but you may want to look into it in case you can't build one in the timeframe you need it for. I don't know how much it costs, but think of it like this: there's a lot of older productions that often used toys for miniature effects. Of course, I say try making it first before using the Hot Toyz figure.

I gotta build everything, that's half the fun! My ED will be pretty big as well. At least 24 inches tall at rest.

We will not be using any CGI I might add. All model and puppets. Although we will be using green screen a lot which is something they couldn't afford to do at the time the originals were made.

Finished the simplified landing arm. Yes that is a trackball from a mouse. :) I only have to build one of these since I will be making molds and so forth. Now I need to finish detailing the side and tail of the HK and on to working on the engine.

This is one of my references. It's some HK toy picture I found online. I'm taking this idea, and blowing it up to about 2 feet long to give it the proper size in camera. Dropping any details that will not be important for the film.

Nice. That's weird, I never noticed that before with the Flying HKs in the films. But actually, it makes sense, as they may have to land sooner or later to refuel.

Engine pod update, still a ways to go. When I finish the main parts I wanna go back over it one more time to add some final touches..

You can see how the landing legs will be positioned at the back as well. Not the level of detail you guys work at but I like how it is coming along.
