First Foam Build: Iron Man

image.jpgimage.jpg Wondering what to do to cover up the large amount of space between the pelvis and the thigh/hip pod. I'm quite worried about it actually, as I hate the look of the gaps and stuff it just ruins the illusion I guess. Any help or suggestions much appreciated! Thanks

edit-

Decided to just foam build my helmet, I'm so frustrated with 3d printing I'm just gonna be done for awhile, but what file should I use, I know a few but could use some insight. Soooo close guys.....

Gaps are usually overcome by wearing black zentai underneath. However, you could customize your parts by adding foam here and there until the gaps are gone.

Hi guys, slight delay on the suit, due to three files being unavailable as my windows is no longer working and I have only Macs, which makes Pepakura..... Impossible :/ If anyone would do a HUGE favor and convert these to pdf files that would be unbelievably helpful.
If you don't want to or can't I understand, it's not a breeze, but I thought I'd try my luck :)

Here they are:

Thanks and here's a slight little update I dremeled some lines into some 2mm foam and stuck it under the arm to see how it will look purely as a test and I'd say it's a start.image.jpg Thanks!

image.jpgKnocked the helmet out over the past couple days, it's actually nicer in person because the dark seam lines make the pieces appear crooked but the are actually quite smooth and even. Still need to straighten out the jaw, but I must say for only a second attempt after a quick test build I'm pretty proud :) It fits like a glove but I haven't attached the last piece of the back, really stressed about getting it to work, and about attaching the ears, which seems to require the bottom piece, any ideas Plz plz plz. Also working on the glove fingers, wasn't there some rubber IM glove people use for the under glove? Thx!
ignore the two bottom pics, ones an earlier photo and the other got stretched out :/ ?

Thanks bro. Tbh I'm getting a little discouraged about this whole project, all these loose ends are just looking endless.....

Hi Bluesteel,
I got some rubber from Mockle. He sells them for the gap between the wrist and forearm, as well as between the fingers (which i cant use because my fat fingers....)

Checked out some rubber options and they are out of my current budget :( however I've seen some very good foam covers for the legs at least. Kind of depressed about all the little thing that demand attention on the suit but my Epsilon Resin should come in a day or two. Earlier in the thread I was told that one trial kit was enough and I hope he's right :D

Going to test scale some boots tonight if I get a chance, but first I think I'm going to try to make some gap covers. Here's one of the sections. I'm planning to attach it to the thigh and have it be able to slide into the back of the calf. I would love some advice for finishing this thing up, especially wondering if there is an iron man red color spandex suit it would maroon work? Finally, the fingers are being a huge pain and are frustrating me to the point if almost quitting and buying flipping 300 dollar or whatever gloves. Any ideas. Thanks for the good words.

I'll be interested to see the gap covers. It's an interesting idea.

I went with a black compression top and trousers (think that's what they're called anyway, tight jogging stuff) in the end for mine. It'll be visible in some areas (under the arms, etc) and I thought it might be a lot of hassle trying to colour match reds so black was as good a choice as any. Other people may have different experiences with some colour or product recommendations though.

Working on fingers at the moment as well and feel your pain. What's the exact issue you're having with them?

Thanks. Here's the back leg cover. 2mm foam, a unified piece but slightly flexible, slightly. The idea is for the curve to be enuf for my leg to fit into but also so it can slip right under the calf piece. Probably won't be able to sit down in the suit, but that was expected. Hope that those hospital visits when I'm done aren't too taxing on my legs ;P and with the fingers is that they're getting too long. If I scale down much more there won't be any room left for the conduit, which is crucial. So the way the fingers are now you can't even bend them because of the right angles on the side of the fingers..... should I find new files? Thx

Smoothon arrived today. I could use some tips guys, a little nervous here, actually very nervous. I hear I need foam brushes and more importantly I hear that one trial kit is enough for a suit and a couple tests. Is this true.

I hope this video will help answer some questions. His website is full of information as well.

The covers are looking good, might try something like that myself.

With the fingers I get what you're saying. For length I just went off template a bit and cut them down till they were fitting a bit better (mixed up the pinky and third finger of course which made things interesting). I ended up making the middle section slightly narrower by cutting out a section of the bottom of it, gives it a little more space for parts to hopefully slide past each other.
I've kind of accepted as well that I wont be able to have full motion with my hands so that might be a factor as well. Have you had any more luck with them?

Hope it goes well with the resin. I have some myself of a slightly different brand/variant. Not got round to testing it out yet though. Look forward to seeing your results.

Ok guys so apparently Epsilon is mixed in a 100A:20B ratio by weight. My scale is out of batteries and there is no way to get the special batteries it needs without waiting another 4 four days, which at this point, is wildly discouraging and frustrating. Im wondering if maybe someone knows a *volume* ratio they could tell me?? If so Plz help it would mean the world. Thx!

Hey guys. Ive basically completed the helmet. Decided to magnetize the jaw, it was the best option available. It comes on fine but my constant determination for the most accurately sized helmet possible are finally catching up to me. When i slide it on, everything looks fine, and it isnt even very tight, but on the ears it bumps out a bit, not a lot, but changes are necessary for it to look good. The ear area was difficult for me to build but i eventually decided to throw a little square of 2mm foam where the ear section is and then put the ears on that. It worked well enough, but now my ears push the sides out a little. Anyone encounter this problem or have any ideas.? My plan is to get it very rigid with epsilon and just manage my way to squeeze into it, which shouldnt be that hard, but either before i do that, or in addition, im going to cut thru the 2mm foam that the ear doesnt require to stay in place, hopefully granting me that last crucial bit of space. Heck, maybe i should just tape my ears flat to my head every time before i suit up Also heres a photo of basically the whole suit placed together:)

image.jpgimage.jpg

And now... The final, but probably not complete, list of things i have to do before I'm done X(

To Build:
4 Leg Plates
2 Hip Pods
2 Knee Covers
1 Boot
10 Fingers
2 Handplates

To Modify:
Helmet
Neck
1 Boots
Legs
Chest

To Strap/Fasten:
Gloves
Shoulders
Legs
Arms
Pelvis
Boots
Forearms
All of this goes over a morph suit I have to buy.

To Light Up:
Chest RT
Hand RT
Helmet Eyes

To Coat, Prime, and Paint:
The whole fricking suit

Note: Still desperately need help with that Epsilon question, if anyone would be so kind :)

Great build so far ! :thumbsup
Please help him out with his question, people :angelHe can then move on with his build

Helmet is now done! I would love to start coating it but my scale's batteries havent arrived yet, and as I don't know of a *mixing by volume ratio*, it looks like another several days of waiting and doing nothing but maybe i can get some little bits of work in. Who knows :/ So i take it nobody has any idea about ^ ?

Bluesteel, I never tried it by volume. But you can get a cheap kitchen scale at walmart. Best method is to form tin foil into a shallow dish, wider the better. Zero that on the scale, and then measure out your two parts.

I used Epsilon on my Cyberman build and it worked great. Thinner the better as it can run and pool at the lowest point. Results in nubs that have to be sanded off. I made it in small batches 20 to 5 grams. I think that is about 1-2 shot glasses worth of material. Don't use a foam brush as it will knock little bits of foam brush off as the product dissolves the brush. Cheap bristle brushes are your friend here.

Nice to see your build coming along. I'm going to build a Nightmare In Silver Cyberman next. Then a couple of cowls (Capt America and probably a Magneto helm). But after that I'm doing one of the Iron Man versions.

My cyberman build linked below.
