Hello everyone! First time posting and introducing myself with my first sculpt, first mold aaand first cast. I hope you like it.

I tried to achieve a mix of the comic look and some kind of realistic look on this mask. It's not perfect, not symmetrical...but well, it's the first try and since the mask itself is meant to look self-made I think it is ok.

Progress on Version No. 2

So, since I did not exactly like the way my Psycho mask turned out in the first try I went on to create another one. Here is the progress so far:

I used a plaster mold of my face/head for the base, since I did not like the fitting on my first mask. The overall shape turned out way better.

This time I used Mars Clay light (note: Light and medium do not only differ in weight: Medium contains sulphur!)

I made a test eye lense with paper to fit into the mask, but modeled the eye lenses with clay lateron

Mouth vents are only basic and will be redone and final cleanup is to follow. Any suggestions?

And....anyone got an advice for molding? I tend not to use rebound 25 rather than mold max. Any good way to pour it on a sculpture like this? My plan is to make a mothermold with plaster and turn the sculpture face down and pour the silicone into the sides.

Looks good! Don't know what to tell you about the molding part... in a similar spot with my sculpt right now. Have the rebound 25 mold done but need to make the shell and having trouble with that. Hope you figure something out for yours.

Doin great. Keep it up!

Thanks!

Well, it was a big mess but I had the chance to get 2 casts done. Will be redoing the mold with rebound 25. I would suggest use plaster or resin with glasfiber for the mothermold. (but thats a pain in the a to work with)

Looking good so far.

thank you ;)

Final sculpt just before molding

The mold ripped of the whole sculpt from its base, but I was able to get the main part of the sculpt out in one part. Still useable.

(Nearly) finished mask on my head cast. (Fits perfectly)

I will now take some time to think about a solution for the glowy eyes and will maybe add a fan from a computer to the mouth piece.

Finished piece looks awesome!

Think CaptainHask had some pics of how he did the LEDs in one of his threads... it was deceptively simple but looks spot-on.

Yeah I know his method. Used it for my first mask: 20130615_162642.jpg

What I don't like is that the LEDs stand out a bit. But I think I will go this way for the prototype and will look into different ways later on.

Ah! Your thread is probably where I saw that then ha ha. Looks great with the LEDs on! But having them externally placed could look a little odd and they'd be visible when turned off... Have you considered using multiple lenses? Been thinking for a way around this issue myself and want to try this out. Basically you'd need 4 individual lenses... the "inner lens" would be set up pretty much how you have there with the LED on the outside, but it would be set further into the mask to make room for another lens on the outside. Both sets would need to have a much lighter tint so you could actually see out of the two lenses, or maybe the inner one could only be a tinted clear plastic piece large enough to cover up the back of the LED. Or maybe you could get LEDs with a very narrow viewing angle so the light is highly directional facing outwards and mount them behind the lenses and eliminate the need for an inner set of lenses... just thinking out loud here. That last one sounds most likely to work and the least amount of work. Mm. Hope some of this was helpful.

I tried the two lense method but the lenses are not tinted enough for that and its much more work and still does not meet up with the actual piece. My idea was to get some LED chips and place them behind the lense, but I can't find LED chips with only 10mms (0.39 inch).

Edit: Anyway: Finished prototype:

The lenses are 3d glasses lenses from the cinema. Bought the edge protection in the DIY market and the electronics from a local store (one set of electronics: switch, batteries + battery compartment, 2 LEDs, 2 resistors total 6 euro)

Aaaaall righty then. Just a smull update. Made a new mold and finished a second mask. I am still not very happy with the mold but it gets the job done.20131025_175259.jpg20131025_180323.jpg20131025_204021.jpg20131025_211825.jpg20131025_222616.jpg20131026_142406.jpg20131027_150201.jpg20131106_150821.jpg
