First Avenger Bucky "Howling Commando" uniform jacket

Hey gang,

New to the RPF, did some looking around on the forums trying to find something similar to what I'm wanting. Haven't found anything online much either. Looking to Rule 63 Bucky's double breasted Howling Commandos uniform but not sure about that jacket. Pants look easy enough with patience and time (or if I want to get lazy buy from one of a million WWII reenactor sellers). The jacket however is a conundrum.

I'm thinking, from pics and stills and watching the movie a hundred times (oh darn! the things we do for cosplay!) it's either brushed down suede (unlikely) or some kind of heavily polished cotton (more likely) or maybe even some sort of nylon. Either way, definitely quilted, which is going to be a (bleep!). The pattern is perplexing and I'm wondering if its why not many cosplayers doing movie Cap cosplay or WWII Bucky is bothering with it. I'm seeing a lot of comic Buckys but not much the adult movie Bucky costume. I did get the Art of the movie book but not much help. I have no access to any of the replicas/displays at cons to do an upclose inspection.

I'm thinking perhaps a Civil War uniform men's pattern, closest thing to a good double breasted style patterned that way. I'm familiar with how that is constructed and they are designed for heavy materials like canvas and wool so I think I can work with any kind of quilted fabric I choose.

I want to essentially keep the entire look. Its very practical and I don't do heels well. I don't want to feminize it as it's the practical soldier look that appeals to me. (Bad enough I'm going to have to *gasp* work out to trim up for it LOL) The leather components I can do or can find from fellow historical reenactors more versed in leather work than myself. Shoes is just a matter of careful hunting online and at flea markets for the right look. Accessories (belt, pouches, ammo belts, suspenders, shoulder rig for the gun) are also pretty standard.

Has anyone attempted this one? What are your experiences? Has anyone seen the Captain America Howling Commando exhibit (i.e. the Smithsonian exhibit from Winter Soldier) that can advise on what they saw of the costume? I have found a hi-res pic of this and others online trying to reference. I know I saw someplace that was selling the white wing patch but now I can't find it again. Ugh! Thank goodness I have until next March!

(And yes I know Bucky wasn't part of the original Commandos but he is in the movie so that's why I labeled it such)

Also, gun guys! His pistol. I'm going back to look at it in stills and I think it's either a Browning or maybe hold over WWI Colt .45. I know guns pre-WWI more than post...sadly. LOL Thoughts?

That jacket stuck out too me as an interesting piece, I wish I knew of something close to it off the shelf. It really is a cool looking jacket, I hope your build goes well!

Yeah I thought about 'feminizing" it a bit, maybe flaring the coat at the hips skirt like, but I like the idea of the belt loops on the jacket. Of course I can still do that. I just wish i could find decent pics of it from some other direction than the front. I tried to get shots off my dvd on the computer but they were still too grainy and blurry or too distant that i couldn't tell exact contruction of the back. Was hoping someone here had taken shots when the costumes were on display at cons, but I guess not. Boggles the mind.

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm hoping I can pull it off!

I unfortunately cannot help with any of your questions, but I am totally subscribing so I can keep track of this. I also love this outfit (and I love when women do versions of costumes like this that aren't completely over-sexualized), so I'm really keen to see how this goes. Good luck with everything!

I'm a little late, but the uniform in the film looks like a modified peacoat. As far as buying something on the market that's close, I'd start there.
