Hey guys. For Halloween this year, I decided to finally try my hand out on an animatronic. I've been wanting to do one for a long time now, and I feel that I've come to a point where I could accomplish one. With that, I will be going as a man that is mid-transformed into an ant. I choose this for several reasons. One being it should be a pretty easy start, since only the pinchers, and antenna's will be moving. And since I won't be having a person following me with controllers for the animatronics, it had to be something I could control with a 6-channel Pololu controller.
That being said, the first thing I did was make a rough sculpt in Blender of what I wanted the head piece to look like. After that I started on my very first maquette, so I could get a good visual on how I wanted the rest of the body to look. Going forward I think I'll be doing maquettes for all of my future ideas, since it's really easy, and fun to rough out a quick, 3-D, model to work off of. The maquette is sculpted in Monster Clay, and I plan on doing the full-sized head animatronic in WED clay. I plan to update this as much as possible as I go along. Hope you guys enjoy.
Here are some pictures of my maquette process.
