Firefly Weapons Collection

how about some detail on the build for the Blue hands death do-hickie

This prop is just a cheesy quickie; something to display with the Blue Gloves.
I originally bought the Arsenel Models/Coolmodels kit because I have so many projects, I figured I'd just save myself the hassle of machining and buying things like acrylic rod.
WRONG!!
In the pic below:

The wavy, huge seamed, piece of cream colored crap is the "kit" from Arsenal Models/Coolmodels, or as I've come to know him, "The Hummelstown Recaster".

The silver ends looked like they came from a craft store and the "castings" are so bad I came to the conclusion it would just be easier to make my own from scratch than build the "kit".

I bought a bunch of 1/4" blue acrylic rods and cut the body out of 1/2" black plastic, which I machined to 1/2"X 4 13/16"X 1 1/8". I machined one end and slotted it to accept a 1/8"X 1/2"X 9/16" aluminum tab to make it look like a dummy button.
I drilled the ends to accept the 1/4" blue acrylic and turned the little end pieces in a lathe to make them look like the show's.

I consider this a temporary prop until I can design and build a pop-opening-one.

where did you pick up that grenade? That is sweet and I know I would love 1.........

Dave

I didn't pick up the grenades, I picked up some scrap round and square aluminum stock and machined all that grenade-like stuff myself!
The grenades pop-open like screen-used, but the spring is a little different and while I want to make them light up, it will be a simple open=on, closed=off LCD powered by a AAA battery.

I own a screen-used hero grenade, and I have to say, your machined repro looks extremely good, even down to the knobs. Nice!

Robstyle, what is tha pi to the right of your grenade? I sthat some behind the scene pic of Mal, looks interesting, never seen it before. Great collection!

That is a great collection as is the group of replicas Birdie built, and so on.
I love prop displays that use a number of different elements, including pics and paper props, to create a 3-D still life.

Does any one else have any more Firefly/Serenity weapons displays to put in this thread?

Mike

Well...it's terribly inaccurate, but I'm thinking of getting around to painting a made-from-memory ceramic Mal pistol that I made when my art school friend let us into the sculpture studio to play around. :) Perhaps I'll finish that up one of these days.

i'll be posting up pics tomorrow to keep this alive. i've been waiting to finish up my MP5-K / MP5-SD5 conversions.

I can at least kick in a progress pic of the sd5:

I still have to build the magazine out and do some additional greeblies.

My mal pistol also looks different now... i've repainted it since this shot:

and more 1/2 finished stuff... my lemat with just the silver paint on it. i've since finished that as well.

man, i really need to get off my butt with the photos! and with the finishing stuff... my wash dinos need paint, my recorder from the message needs paint.

Looks great so far! But if you're shooting for uber accuracy, Jayne's gun is an SD2. Same essential weapon, but with the older style SEF lower receiver which had the finger grooved handgrip, and non-ambidextrous safety.

If you're building it off an airsoft gun (which I assume you are), you can get the SEF lowers pretty cheap. I converted mine and it was a snap.

There's a quote I can relate to!
I posted my stuff finished or not just to show I mean well.
Now the big hope is to finish all my unfinished project, too.

Man, I keep seeing all these great conversions of Firefly weapons- especially Jaynes Colt and MP, but I have never seen any parts lists or conversion tutorials. Are there any good ones around?

On the big MP I used a Vortex flashlight with a cut-back Tokyo Marui Mp5 clawmount.

The weird 'eyepiece' part at the rear of the flashlight, I used a piece of almuiium pipe with the lid from a candy tube on the end!

There's a plumbing pipe connector up at the front of the barrel. The rest was just stuff I had lying around or got from the hardware store. I scratchbuilt the mag around the existing one, so the gun would still fire.

I totally failed to ID the 'reversed flashlight' on the MP5k, and ended up using aluminium pipe again. I'd still like to ID the correct flashlight. The straight mags are quite easy to get from soewhere like Gunboker.

The Colt add-ons I completeley sratch-built from mainly styrene and Milliput.

*grumbles*

'cept if you're in MA, where normal folk can't bring a high cap (> 10 round) magazine into the state :-/

there's a guy in texas that's getting one for me and sawing the top off so it can't be used for a weapon anymore. i should follow up on that... it's been a month or so.

as far as the big gun goes... the only SD2s i've seen have been WAY more money than the sd5 there (well, even that is an sd6 with a replacement stock. i've been learning about mp5s as i go!).

i'm planning to sculpt some of the details myself. i'm sort of upgrading as i go. not the smartest plan, but that's the whole "learning as i go" problem.

i got the sd6 for $18 and then got some other mp5 with the right style stock for $15. the sd2s i've seen have been several hundred :)
