Firefly cosplay

I'm trying to put together Malcolm Reynolds from the pilot episode during the battle of serenity valley for a group here in Colorado. I have his HK-G36K rifle as well as his pistol. Its hard to get a glimpse at his entire uniform so can someone help me? Photo references, materials and the best places I can find his gear including the patches.

The Companion volume has a small pic of Sergeant Mal, but really, screencaps from the episodes are your best bet.
Both the pilot and "The Message" are good sources of wartime uniform info.

But it sound to me like you're looking for references for an Independent soldiers uniform.
The best thing I can suggest is to start with the 76th Independent Battalion.
76th Independent Battalion - Uniform

They are NOT entirely screen accurate, as the group was started before good screencaps were available.
But they will get you most of the way there.
