Fire Spray 31 patrol and attack craft from Oovo IV prison

Re: Slave-1

Were in the high 20s to 30 here Jason, its unheard of, I'm checking resin like you wouldn't believe.

Mike, have you thought of the box design heater, think a fella posted it up here a while back when pulling Threepio parts, just consisted of a four sided box, reflective inner walls, with a halogen heater in the bottom, the platen nestled on top, from memory it worked like a beast, sure it was a Youtube link, very simple and effective!

Re: Slave-1

Michael, youll have no problems with that burner. I measured the heat coming off ours and we were over 950 degrees. and easily heated 1/2 inch styrene and ABS. in under 6 minutes.

Heres the one we built at work. it doesn't get any easier than this. a box, propane. a heater and a shop vac. and you've seen the stuff weve made.

Re: Slave-1

Damn photobucket I moved some pics to another folder
and they are not here in the thread now....I can re-post them.
But yea Lee I saw that guys rig very nice for sure, he had a great
pull on the C-3 torso!!!!! I would pick up this burner now but I
am not sure if the burners are going to rotate back 90 deg, I read in the
description they swivel 360deg but thats it? Lee I would like the parts to
finish at 3mm so probably shooting for "Trying" to use 4.5mm will see what
happens there is not a lot of detail on these things just "shape". If I can get
the heating down I think i can go with a thick plastic.

Re: Slave-1

Yeah buddy it was a really simple on the fly method, but spot on, if the heaters don't tilt way back, your screwed as most have a tip failsafe i think?
4.5mm styrene, holy.....this will be able to take small arms fire lol!

Yea well the FM kit is molded in 1.5mm so I can't
really start at 3mm and form down i need to be above that
when I start. Yea small arms coming from paintball airsoft or pellet
should be ok!! LMAO It's all trial really though just see what happens
when i get there.....they have 5 sheets of 4.5 so I will pick one up
and see how it works...:D

Re: Slave-1

Sounds totally feasible mate, last thing you want are super thin spots on the higher peaks of the buck i guess, thats a meaty bit of styrene 4.5mm, wow, and a lot of area on the edges to apply adhesive to for bonding!

Going with this.....it comes in perfect in length the
width short at 17 inches so I ordered 2 of them,
figured I can always have them to cook on outside
for parties or power outages! :) I will piggy back them
opposite each other. The legs come off so easy to store,
I saved the money making the table so figured spend some
on the heating as a don't have a choice. I need something
for this big former thats always going to work!!! Each burner
is 3,000 to 35,000 BTU's on high and there will be 6 going
so plenty of heat.....especially with a box around it!!

Re: Slave-1

So its a Slave pulling morning, followed by beer and a Barbecue in the afternoon on the same oven, sounds like every boys wet dream mate lol.

Re: Slave-1

Ok the table is 100% finished now.....

It's better not to rely on the force when
vacuum forming....LOL I made some guides
out of some aluminum stock.

These have to be shimmed as well so you
have to set the frame work around the
platen....as if it just touched down during
the pull then shim it to fit.

Re: Slave-1

I tested for vacuum leaks today I placed a piece of wood over
the platen....it just got real quiet there was no hissing which
is what I wanted. I tried to lift the wood up off the paten, I
ended up lifting the entire former on one end and this thing
weighs 48lbs minus the frame work! LOL

Re: Slave-1

Wow, you never cease to amaze me Michael.
EDIT: If your pulling multiples of this you know I'm like 3rd then ::D

Re: Slave-1

So I've been lurking in this thread from the beginning and can't hold back from asking this Noob question - are these going to end up as a kit and for sale? Because already, this thing is looking spectacular!!!

Re: Slave-1

You've been very busy Mike !
Great job, cant wait to see the first pulls !

Tox what's up stranger haven"t seen you around in a while.....
I saw those droids you were working on amazing!!!!

Well I pulled the fenders in a thicker styrene today 3mm
and I was looking at the riser stuck in the bottom. It was
way off I never noticed it before, maybe because it was
embedded in the white styrene it really showed for the
first time. But i figured if the shape of the riser is off
than so is the part I traced it from.......sure enough!:D

Wrong by that much thats like 10mi wrong!!! LOL

So i took that paper template and cut it out
in styrene, then I glued it to the back of the
fender.

Then I added in the clay, it will just
have to cure up then I can make it
pretty again. I filled the center as
well, that way the cut out shape
can be tweaked more with a template
I will make.

Re: Slave-1

I'm picking my slave up on Wed this week so lets compare some dims and notes when you get a chance. No matter how off you where it still looked great Mike, Kudos for going back and making it better, you a dedicated monster of a machine

Thanks Guy....that was a bit to much for me
to leave that way.....ugh!:(

Next bit of reality....I made the front skirt taller and wider than it
had to be....which is good but I didn't realize how much wider
until I stacked the parts today. That skirt has to match the profile
of the front of the fuselage, you can see how much it has to come
in on the sides. However I am not going to do that now, I am going
to form the two fuselage halves and then get them fitting clean, after
that I will place the formed fuselage up on the skirt buck. This will give
me the final profile shape to adjust via sanding. I have to take 3mm at
least off each formed half of the fuselage because they were built up on
3mm stock, then whatever after that to get them joining clean. Like I said
when they are together clean I will take that profile and pencil on the skirt
buck and adjust it then.

Re: Slave-1

Some shots .....i will probably have to adjust the
rear skirt a bit after dialing in the front skirt, to
match the profile of the fuselage nose.
