Hi all, feels like ages since I showed off any new stuff here. Anyhow, I've just finished a SS Probe droid as a commission build for a fellow board member. It's been finished for a while, I'm currently working on a base for it but tonight I took the time to take some beuty pics of it.

I hope you all like it, IMO this is without doubt one of the coolest SS subjects that ever been offered as a kit! Thanks Steve, Rolando and all others who made this kit possible!

It’s a beauty.
Looking at this kind of professional craftsmanship is going to turn me into a Star Wars Prop Collector for sure.

Great job.

Great job!!!!!

What's the base color? did you scratch built or improved a few areas? I notice some clean details that the kit was lacking in areas.

Re: Finished SS PROBE DROID!

Thanks guys! It feels great to be able to show off a new model after all this time! My new company (we do grafic designs, illustrations and photography) is keeping me bussy 24/7 and propin' time is down to a minimum.:cry I'm also gearing up to be a dad, yes that's right! I'm gonna have a baby in late november!

GF, yes, I had to rebuild a lot of stuff on this model. I also hooked up a bright white LED light. The body and head was in rather poor shape so most of the project time were spent here. This seems to vary from model to model though. Mine is in perfect condition!

Regarding the paint job, this was a tough one to nail down! The real model tends to shift color (from gun metal/dark grey to red/brown/rust)depending on how it's lit. I basicaly tried to replicate that.

I used Tamiya acrylics for the entire model, starting with RLM grey which really looks green. I always thought the real one had a green sheen to it. I then coated it gun metal mixed with clear smoke. After that I really lost track. There's som many layers of enamel washes and acrylic misting layers that I don't really know where to start. I used a lot of brown, red , rust and black. The best advice I can give is to go on instinct, do what you feel looks right! If I would do another one it would probably look different.

After all the layers where there I polished and scuffed the model to give a nice sheen and worn look to it. The eyes where painted with black acrylic and then coated with several layers of "future clear floor varnish". Finally I chipped it with an artists silver pen. It's one of those pencils that aircraft modellers have used for years to weather plastic models with.

Well, not exactly the best tuturial in the world but hopfully it'll give you some ideas on how it was painted.

Cheers,

Steve.
