Finally saw Avatar and....

I like to boycott popular movies and planned on not seeing this one but my wife wanted to see it so we got the blu-ray disc. So I cleared my assumptions and sat down to try and enjoy the movie.

My verdict:

Story: A good story, though it has been done before. Be it Dances with wolves or Ernest Goes to Camp the story was nothing new but still enjoyable.

CGI: I admit I had my doubts when I saw clips of this but watching it on our 55" screen the effects looked great. We recently watched the LOTR trilogy and was a bit disappointed by how fake a lot of the CGI looked on our TV. This was not the case here.

Gripes: As mentioned before the story was good but the ending was awful. So was the commander a Terminator (i'm kidding)? It sure seemed to imply that a bit when he jumped out of the ship. Heck there was even a part where the bass beat sounded a bit like the terminator music. My son caught this and we even replayed the scene afterward. The ending was laughable to say the least and completely seemed out of place with everything else.

I thought the exact thing about the CGI. In 3d on IMAX I was very impressed, but on my plasma the characters look very cartoon especially when juxtapositioned next to real humans.

Okay two things bother me :

1. Did anyone notice the avatars have FIVE fingers and the natives have only four ? Didn't they think this was sign enough they were different ?

2. Netiri (sp?) her whole attitude change only when her man brings home the payload (the dragon thingy) and everyone likes the guy is she then okay with him.

Got Maul, do you mean the LOTR characters looked fake? That was what Deric meant, but it sounds as if you're talking about Avatar, which seems odd, because they're really very good IMO. (And I was all set to *hate* Avatar.)

The Avatars have a mix of human and N'avi DNA; they're literally partial clones of their human wearers. Hence the five fingers (and human nose in Sigourney's case). The Na'vi know perfectly well that they are different.

Neytiri's change of heart is only one of a few dozen big manipulative moments. In context, it's no biggie. You KNEW it was coming, Cameron telegraphed it from the first moment of the first attack by the big dragon thingy.

Deric, what was it that you hated so much about the ending? It's no better or worse than the rest of the cheesefest. Full disclosure; I was quite anti pre-release but am now a quasi-Avatard. I just don't have any illusions about the thing.

I really enjoyed it. It was a bit preachy concerning the whole environmentalist/global warming tones, but aside from that, a very entertaining flick. I have enjoyed it as much on Blu Ray as I did on the big screen, both regular and 3D Versions. Overall I think the eye candy portion of the film was the biggest draw for me, I thoroughly enjoy watching this film. :)

Pretty much sounds like a women to me.:lol

? It didn't say one thing about global warming. If you want to read an agenda into it, at least pick on something that's actually there. ;)

So was the commander a Terminator (i'm kidding)? It sure seemed to imply that a bit when he jumped out of the ship.

After seeing the other guys slide down cables in their robo-suits earlier in the movie, I wondered why this guy can jump out, land with a grunt and not be screaming "MY GUTS JUST SHOT OUT OF MY BUTT!!!" when he hit the ground. I guess he's just more tough than the others. :lol

They did mention the planet has weaker gravity than Earth, so that helps.

You're right! Thanks, I completely forgot about that. The colonel did mention he was working out to keep in shape because of the lesser gravity.

Don't get me wrong, I like the movie but all together the relationships, conflict and good vs bad was very simplified. Although, this is what sells in the international market AND US market.. the box office proves it.

I'll just go back to the Notebook - lol

Okay two things bother me :

2. Netiri (sp?) her whole attitude change only when her man brings home the payload (the dragon thingy) and everyone likes the guy is she then okay with him.

Her problems with him were that he lied about what he came for and that made her think he was lying about now being on the side of her people.

I took her change of heart to be inspired by a sign from their tree goddess, just like the floaty seeds that lit on him inspired her to think he was important.

So when he flew in like that, it not only meant that he was willing to risk and able to actually tame the most powerful of the dragons, but it was a sign that he was to become a great religious leader to their people. (they mentioned this in the set up early on)

That to her meant he was telling the truth, he had a change of heart and was now truly 'one of them'. When her faith in him was restored, so was her love...

Well the ending isn't the end, but more a to-be-continued to see what's next in the world of Pandora for Sulley and the Na'vi. Should be interesting.

Despite being a fan of Cameron's work, this one just didn't jump out at me.

Never made it to the theater, but just bought the BR.

It was okay. But that's about all.
