FINALLY, I found my dream prop (Mission: Impossible)

It may not seem like much to ya'll, but I've wanted this thing ever since I'd watch Mission: Impossible when I was a teen (20+ years ago). I was never able to properly ID it until my good pal Art told me that it was a Craig (He was able to read the name "Craig" on one of the reels in a blurry screen cap I sent him).

Throughout the series run, they used a few different brands and styles of reel-to-reels, but this one was used the most and looks the coolest (IMHO).

Months and months of daily eBay searches, weeding through all the crappy R2Rs - I finally find the correct one! The best part, I got it for a song ($15)

I'm totally impressed! I didn't know I ever wanted one, but now I am certain of it. Do you plan to modify it to match the screen-used prop?

Of course I am!! In the show sometimes the head with the "Craig" name is covered with textured tape (as shown above) and sometimes they kept it uncovered, but only when the player just had the Craig symbol on the head (two circles w/ a vertical line through it).

I wish mine had the symbol rather than the name, but that's ok. I'll just cover it with tape.

Oh nerts - I just discovered that it's missing one of the tri shaped bolts.
tri-screw.jpg

It screws into the center of the wheels and the tri knobs are what the reels are pulled with. Without it, I can't rewind, unless I take the bolt off the right side and put it on the left, then swap them back when I play.

I wonder how hard it would be to have one machined or find a replacement.

Coool, I'm raised up with the 1988 version, where Jim had the micro-disc player.
I actually liked the '88 version too. Not as much as the original, but it was pretty good. Especially when Barney made a guest appearance (he is, by far, my favorite IMF agent).

Now that they finally put the final 70s season out on DVD, maybe they'll release the '88 seasons.

Terrific score, DCB! And how sweet to have this payoff after doing all of that gruntwork.

Looking forward to your mods! :thumbsup

Check the packing box, it may have come off in shipping. Also check the ebay photos to see if it was there.

Cool find, are you going to extract some of the audio messages from the shows and put them on tape ? :D
You at least have to put the theme on tape.

This post wont self destruct.......

I rechecked the auction picture and the piece was missing. Oh well, it's not like it doesn't work without it - it just doesn't rewind (unless I swap the piece back to the other side).

I already put a "mission" on the tape. I just stuck the microphone in front of my speaker. It sounds totally fine.

Someone told me that 80% hydrogen peroxide will make the tape smoke up (but you can only do that once). I wonder if that's what they did in the show?
