Final Words on the Foam Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Damn Rylo, the guy is just a piece of work. He makes these cans and a whole bunch of other metal props, and calls himself a "good" propmaker. I can do BETTER!.

I'm going to make my cryocan out of foam. If Iron Man people can do it, so can I.

(Before you close this window - keep reading please - I know some elders here have a foamphobia)

So, either way, I figured the best way to start making the can was to go to my local pharmacy and pick up a can of barbasol.

To much my surprise - THEY CHANGED THE CAN! AUGH! That's right folks, you read right, cryocans as seen in JP1 can no longer be accurately produced. My first attempt at making a prop shot down before it could even begin!

Sure future prop makers can slap a sticker on the can or something to cover up the new design, but that's just one more step removed from the original prop that I, as a longstanding member of the RPF, will not stand for. Replica movie props are the best when they are Cast from the Original or made with all accurate parts. Sadly, one of the most accurate parts for the cryocan is now unavailable.

Have other's seen the new design? The can has a blue shield behind the word barbasol now. I guess they're trying to compete with some newer brands (gillette..etc.)

So those who have a cryocan, hold onto it for dear life. Another piece of our history is lost to the sands of time. We'll be able to tell stories to our kids about how barbasol cans "back in the day" only used to have red blue and white stripes.

I've only seen Rylo's cryocan come into fruition, and he's been making them in limited supply over the last few years. Perhaps he has a giant stash of old barbasol cans somewhere. Perhaps he's just a really hairy dude and needs a lot of extra shaving cream. Perhaps he has sasquatch in his basement that he needs to shave down every once in a while to take him outside or else it'll eat his family.

I guess we'll have to wait and see what the JP cryocan makers come up with.

Dude Where were you when Ry shouted out to the members here about this.

He searched high and low buying not only cases but PALLETS of the old cans.

No corner of the globe was not searched for those precious cans and at great risk to him just ask him about the time...ah screw it he's better at telling stories anyhow.

I can tell you this, you have not lived untill you have been to one of his infamous shaving cream, wesson oil parties.

Wax on, wax off indeed!

I didn't know he used real barbisol shaving cream cans. I assumed his replicas used custom graphics and such. I use Barbisol and would have gladly donated my empty cans. I have one left with the old graphic...... My prrreeciious......

I respect Rylo to no end' but imagining him dancing through shaving cream ...i dunno......
Sigh, yea I don't know where I was when he announced it, but I figured it needed to be said in case anyone missed it.

HA! :lol

Thomas, I'm sure your fun-foam cryocan will look spectacular.

Seriously, though... Thomas is correct, Tony is correct and I'm pretty much always correct. :cool

Barbasol rebranded a couple months ago. They had been flirting with it for years; doing everything from adding race cars (NASCAR) to the cans, to changing the sizes for drug stores, etc. If you want to try your hand at a cryo you better get to diggin' because there's very little old-stock out there. The UPC codes are the same, too and everyone is using old stock photos in everything from Amazon adds to Ebay. It's the end of an iconic logo as we knew it.

Everyone's cryo just got a little more valuable. Since there are no more cans, there can't be anymore runs. I mean, why bother? What's out there is it! I suggest you get one while you can since prices will most certainly be going up.

-Rylo

Here's a shot of the new cans next to the classic style we all know and love.

I only just picked mine up the right time then!

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

I thought I had time. I thought it would be okay.

Dang it I should have grabbed one a while back. Even if it was just the can it would be a cool prop but who thought they would change it. Might look around just in case. Dollar stores here I come.

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Interior decorators of all people really started snatching up the old cans by the case. Since the style had been the same for decades it seems people really liked to use them as counter dressing on old sinks and such. Who knew?!

People will be able to find strays here and there for a personal display but not anything appreciable enough to offer runs down the road. I predict they'll pretty much all be off the shelf in a month or less at stores.

By the way. Doller Stores tend to just stock the skinny 'vacation size' can. Better off trying the grocery store and looking behind the new cans for the last of the old stock.

I'm curious, does anyone know how long they'd been using the old design? It's 20 years since JP, and presumably the can wasn't new then?

40+ years on the main logo. There have been slight variations on the back to the UPC code, etc. but the front logo and stripes remained unchanged for decades.

And here I was, throwing them away! Doh! I thought there was other details (other than what's shown)
That made them inaccurate. Well I still have one left to finish!

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

The only things really changed over the years was the bar code on the back and the very small addition of the website. The front stayed the same with the exception of the weight. 11OZ was changed to 10OZ, but the size of the can and the main graphic remained unchanged. The beauty of the original design was it's simplicity and instant brand recognition.

The shape of the can changed slightly too in the late 90s. In JP, the can is completely straight from top to bottom, on the current cans there's a curve at the top and bottom just before the point where the caps join... I don't think they've made the straight cans since about 1995 or so...
