Final Words on the Foam Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

What, no menthol?

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Thank god I have the world's slowest growing facial hair, then :lol. I picked up (inadvertently) a can of shaving cream a few months ago, and as it turns out, it's the correct style.

Guess when it's finished, I'll hold on to the can. Then, in a few years, I can sell it on ebay, when the demand for cryocans spike again, :lol.

I'm not so sure about that since the bottom was crimped on, but even if that were the case, that portion of the can is cut off for the prop anyway leaving the bottom of the cryo rack to serve as the faux bottom. The main graphic was the important part.

The shape of the can changed slightly too in the late 90s. In JP, the can is completely straight from top to bottom, on the current cans there's a curve at the top and bottom just before the point where the caps join... I don't think they've made the straight cans since about 1995 or so...

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

So what this thread is telling me is..... if I "happen" to have a stash of the cans with the correct graphics.... they are gold?

So do you think I could trade a stash of original cans for one finished Cry-can prop? :lol

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

I shave once a week and picked up a number of these a while ago for $1.16 a piece.
I'm still on my first can so 'I' know 'I' have a stash :D

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

I picked one up myself, found it buried in between new cans. While I think it's really cool to hold on to. I don't believe it's worth it's weight in gold. It's only worth something to the maker of cryocans, Rylo. I'm sure Rylo has planned ahead and got a bunch of these cans ahead of time.
For any one else, it's just $1.5 shaving cream because there would be no way to get that whole metal doo dad inside the can for anyone else.

I know, I was just being sarcastic :lol

Not the top part of the can... The cans made at the time JP was filmed were perfectly straight on the top and bottom. Since about the mid-to-late 90's the can design changed with the curved lip at the top and bottom. See the arrow below:

The screen-used cans did not have this shape:

Finding this exact can these days is very difficult... But it's an easy thing to look for when someone lists one of Rylo's cans on eBay as a 'screen used original' and is asking $10,000 for it... :cool (Yes, that's happened more than once...)

(Looking at Barbasol's website, this shape change may have happened in the late 80's actually... JP might have been using even older cans than I thought.)

But, I want to see your progress on the foam cryocan! Enough chit-chat, get to building, man!!! :lol

He does not have a basement... but you were close, RYLO IS SASQUATCH! ( I have seen this with my own eyes! ):lol

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Thought you were talking about the conical white part. The crimp in the top and bottom (and the weld/seam if we're splitting hairs) has actually moved around quite a bit over the years as far as being more or less pronounced. The primary graphic is all I've ever been concerned with. Sad to see it go since that's really what mattered to the eye.

Oh well, all good things come to end.

Yeah, I'm kind of surprised at how much it changed... After having it nearly the same for decades, you would think they would want to stick with a tried-and-true well know design.

I only noticed the little details on the screen-used can when I was trying to dis-prove an eBay sale for a screen-used one... If it wasn't for that incident, I don't think I would have ever noticed. :D

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

Yeah, I've seen people try and float some fast ones on-line, too. The machine crimp you're talking about probably changed due to new and more effective packaging methods. I agree on the graphic. A bit of a shock they changed it after all these years. Funny thing is, nobody cares but us prop geeks and apparently interior decorators. :lol

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

So I spent some time last night building up my AWESOME foam cryocan. It's every bit as accurate as the original prop, or that guy who makes them now..what's his face, Ry-- something. Check that out 2 cents worth of foam and a random metal piece and I've got myself an accurate cryocan.

Now, I know what you're thinking, I've got the wrong color gasket on the bottom making it look completely inaccurate. I guess I'll have to ask around to see if I can find one. As soon as I find one I bet Ry will feel threatened that I'm going to steal all of his clients. Be afraid! Be very afraid! muah-ha-ha-ha :ninja

Once this is painted silver, it's going to be indistinguishable from the original. The foam I used is a bit porous though. I know most people seal their foam, and then bondo it to fill all those holes. I'll probably just buy a big can of silver paint and dip the whole thing in. That way the paint will really goop up inside all the holes and fill them up automatically. Bet you builders never thought of that trick! :cool

And LOOK - vials even fit inside my cryocan! I haven't figured out how to make it "pop" open and make a metal "clink" sound. I thinking that I'll have to add a spring somewhere and then glue two quarters to certain pieces. When the spring activates the two coins will clink together and that's 90% of the battle right there. If it sounds like metal, and is silver painted everyone will think it's metal.

Honest opinions and comments are welcome. Don't be afraid, I want this to be just right before I offer these up in the JY. I figure being foam, I could ask half of what others have been asking for their metal ones.

That's the best foam cryocan I've ever seen today. :)

Re: Screw Rylo and his Cryocan! Important Jurassic Park info inside

I still have 1 or 2 cans at home from when the grocery store I worked for received a force-out of 10 pallets of the stuff. We were selling it super cheap, so I stocked up.

I've been wanting to cut the bottom off of one so I can have a spare for my Rylo can. I just don't know how to do it without bending the shell (and will the limited tools I have)

Love it! :lol
