FIINISHED! Gundam RX-78-2

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Here's the recent images..(Not Yet Updated) the one where i wore with only one shoulder is the v1 of the shoulder. The images on the floor are the final result..

Elric Gundam huh? That's a new one. :p

It's not quite done yet, but here's what I have so far for the backpack. I simplified it already, but it's still by far the most detailed part of the costume. @_@ It's a bit frustrating getting all the pieces to line up. And while working on this, I realized... foam sheets can be scored (using a dried ballpoint pen) and folded just like cardstock. D'oh! That would've saved me so much time and trouble had I known about it sooner. LOL

I wish I had known that when I was making my wife's pistol holster.

granted, the fold wont be as crisp or defined compared to paper due to the material's flimsiness, but it still helps. :p

I've started working on it again! I figured out how to get the backpack to connect and finished the yellow collar. Backpack still needs some work-- it's still missing the thrusters and those two protruding white bars at the top need to be black. There are also seam lines on the saber handles that need to be covered up. I did some test fitting with what I had so far sans upper arms:

I've been trying to think of a way to get the arms to line up with the shoulders since mine aren't anywhere near as broad. I also want to make joints for the elbows, but I'm not sure how to go about making it yet. So far the only idea I have is to use a grommet and those paper binder fastener thingies that splits (I have no idea what they're called..)

And I also got started on the head. It looks really messy right now, but hopefully it'll look the way I want once the final layer of craft foam comes on.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Well for the arms what you can do is attach the biceps to the shoulder where you feel they should be, then cut a hole lower down on the bicep where your arms can go in then just wear some black fabric on the day and boom!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks for the tip, I've thought about it and I'll most likely be going with something along those lines for the arms :)

Less than 30 days left to finish this! I'm 95% done with the head, all I need is some tinted plastic for the eyes and the head will be good to go! There were lots of things that didn't quite come out the way I wanted them to, especially the vulcans, but I'm satisfied with it as a whole. This was so frustratingly tedious to put together that I'm just happy to have it out of the way haha.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

That's looking awesome. As a Gundam freak (I pretty much eat, sleep and breathe Gundam... and Star Wars) seeing threads like this really get me in the mood to work on my own costume. Maybe one day. I do have a Gihren Zabi cosplay but I've never done a mecha before.

Anyhow, it looks like your costume is looking awesome so far. The beam saber hilts look a little on the long side, but other than that everything is looking pretty much spot-on. Great job. :)

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

What does everyone use for the lifts?

I'm struggling to find something lightweight that I can stand on in my parts.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Kumoricon is over! I entered the costume contest there and won first in my division as well as crowd favorite :) I wasn't able to do everything I wanted on it (Eyes, knee bolts, decals) but it was finished enough to look like a final product. Here are the rest of my progress pics, as well as photos of it in action during the con. As far as future gundam cosplays go, I don't think I'll be doing another one anytime soon.
