FIINISHED! Gundam RX-78-2

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks, they really do a good job of stealing attention away from the imperfect edges haha

Got the frame of the plates all done. Very sloppy, but here are some pictures to give you a better idea idea of how I made them. I used paper towel rolls as supports.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

I planned to finish one more shoulder plate tonight, but ended up finishing a whole shoulder. LOL. It's so satisfying seeing it slowly come together!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

dude, sick! I know what you mean about finally seeing it come together, I kinda just wanna walk around with my partial suit today

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Awesome... :D Good choice of gundam. Too bad i choose the 00 fast without thinking of its small abs instead of rx-0..
Wish you luck bro.:thumbsup
I just started building the gundam 00 hopefully if i get some fine result. Keep this thread alive. :D
You got a fan in me. :D
Btw for i got 3d files of gundam deathscythe piece by piece. I'm willing to share and see how they turn out to be. They used to be for a toy model but they provided slice piece so i think they might be good for costume..

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Awesome stuff. As a total Gundam geek I am rather envious of you. I've always wanted to put together a Gundam costume but never could figure out how to start it (or for the matter, how to make the time to do it... I always seem to be swamped with work on other costumes). x.x

If you want just mail me and i'll send the build of rx-78-1 alex :D

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

@iforelskelseyou yeah, I saw both yours and and takaaaa's gundam threads. Been keeping an eye on them :)

Took me a while, but I finally managed to finish both of the shoulder pieces. I took some pictures in the process to show how I've been going about making most of the costume. The little vents are basically just lines drawn on a piece of paper with rectangular pieces of craft foam layered over them. Foam pieces were measured, cut, and hot glued on to the cardboard base. Unfortunately hot glue doesn't adhere very well to masking tape, so I sometimes have to go back and remove bits of it. Thats why it looked all torn up in the second picture

Thats awesome build.. can't hardly tell that you used a cardboard with that build. :D.
Keep up the work. :D

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

I finished the crotch piece :) Finally got to work with plastidip+spraypaint. I gave it 2 layers of plastidip and later 2 more layers of white Rustoleum spraypaint. So far, the paint is sticking incredibly well to the plastidipped surface which is awesome, but I ended up getting a kind of grainy texture... and some tiny cracks. I'm thinking it may have been because I sprayed on too thick. Which I'm hoping is the case because the whole torso is going to be spraypainted @__@

Here's what the texture looks like up close. You can tell the difference between the painted surface and the foam on the left.

I really didn't like that texture, so I ended up covering the front face with foam. And I'm glad I did cause it looks awesome :D Edges still aren't perfect, but they get lost in all of the details I think.

Instead of spraypainting craft foam for the red, I ended up using a painted piece of card stock. I got excited to see it finished so I just cut out a flat V shape from yellow foam and stuck it on there haha. I might replace it with a 3d one later on. You can see the textured side of the EVA foam mat on the inside of the white piece, but it's not really noticeable when put together.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

I've been lurking this group for a week or so and finally had to join to tell you how great your pieces look. I first discovered the group when I came across clive's amazing tutorial while researching how to better the armor I'm doing for my first build. I had never even heard of gundam before and now I'm obsessed with it. I then discovered other gundam threads (yours included) and was amazed at how great they look. Every day I've been coming in here just to see if you've made more progress. Haha keep up the good work!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Welcome Yoren! Gundam is amazing and offers so many opportunities for great costumes!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Hi kialna. Your thread was another one I was checking out! Your costume turned out amazing. I could take lessons from you on patience and perseverance. I'm only 1/2 way through my first build (not a gundam) and it drives me insane when things don't turn out the way I like.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

That insanity will never go away. Even now with smaug, with whom I'm on a timelimit, I keep redoing things because I didn't like how it turned out. I might have to cut some corners and add them later. Of course, I hope not. :)

It's also a good thing. Eye for detail can lift your costumes to the next level. But it takes time. Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm not as good as the majority here, but I'm working my way up. Slowly.

It takes patience and determination but eventually, when something does go well, the feeling of succes is a wonderful thing. Keep going!

Thanks! This means a lot :,) you should share your work with us if you haven't already!

I've been working on this every night lately, but about 1/3 to half of the time was spent looking at what I have, test fitting, trying to figure out how to make the future pieces, or experimenting with paints and different materials. I initially planned for the upper and lower arms to work like sleeves you simply slip on, but it just didn't look right due to the gundam's super broad shoulders... I ended up going with the 3-sided biceps method like in clive's exia below
Other than that, I also made some changes to the torso piece and started adding on the red. I discovered something weird in the process, but I'll save it for next time :)
