FIINISHED! Gundam RX-78-2

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Good call on the 3/4 bicep. I MIGHT be broad enough in the shoulder to do a 7/8 bicep (lower inner part, but not the upper) for Deathscythe when I get around to it. We shall see.

Otherwise, it's looking great!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks! This means a lot :,) you should share your work with us if you haven't already!

I've been working on this every night lately, but about 1/3 to half of the time was spent looking at what I have, test fitting, trying to figure out how to make the future pieces, or experimenting with paints and different materials. I initially planned for the upper and lower arms to work like sleeves you simply slip on, but it just didn't look right due to the gundam's super broad shoulders... I ended up going with the 3-sided biceps method like in clive's exia below
Other than that, I also made some changes to the torso piece and started adding on the red. I discovered something weird in the process, but I'll save it for next time :)

Awesome build.. :D Can't wait to see the finish product.
GUNDAM BUILDERS ASSEMBLE. :D

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Got one side skirt and the ... back crotch? done. I didn't really follow the reference image for the side skirt because it was very detailed. I kept the shape mostly the same but simplified a lot of the panel lines on it. I've been happy with my progress lately, which is roughly one piece a day. If I can keep it up I should be finished in no time :D

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Oh, the back plates I just call back skirts. I was talking about the center piece on the back haha. Middle buttcheek? LOL.

I finished putting together the waist and I think it went pretty well for the most part. I screwed up on the measurements for the sides of the base where the side skirts attach and it made them look too small and out of place. A minor setback, but I fixed it by repositioning the back skirts and making them angled as opposed to perpendicular to the sides. I'll probably add another layer of cardboard to reinforce the inside of the base, but other than that, I'm pretty confident that the hinges/joints/connection points for the flaps will hold. PVA glue is really good for cardboard on cardboard and hot glue bonds foam extremely well. That said, its definitely heavy.... I'm going to have to figure out a way to hold it up... Either more shoulder straps or figure out a way to clip it to the torso.

The third picture pretty much shows everything I have so far put together. I'm surprised by how snugly the torso fits into the base of the waist :) Just... not going to be able to rotate at the waist at all. Hopefully that won't be too much of an issue. I'm going to move the crotch piece down cause I don't like the way it touches the middle of the torso (chest crotch? bwahaha :lol)

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Really pretty! However, watch out for the slope angle on the chest

It has a slight sweep across the torso that just nakes it look a tad less boxy, if you're going for the real grade look :) perhaps it will all look normal with the yellow collar idk :1

Kou Uraki.... LAUNCHING!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Coming along beautifully. Are you happy with the strength of the cardboard? Also, you said you discovered something weird when making the torso piece?

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

All your pieces look amazing so far, can't wait to see it all finish and together!

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Thanks for the comments as always guys! Yeah, building the helmet is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most hehe.

The cardboard has been working for me pretty well so far. I find that two layers is just the right amount, but for outer pieces like the shoulders and skirt flaps one is more than good enough. For folds and edges, it's better to use one "whole" piece as opposed to joining two edges with tape. I don't like the strength of tape, so when joining two pieces I like to use smaller pieces of cardboard, folding them into an "L" shape and using them kinda like brackets.

And as for the discovery, I did some tests with spraypaint directly onto the foam (without plastidip) and found that it worked great. o_o It the paint didn't dissolve the foam at all and doesn't come off. I only got minor cracks on areas where I sprayed a little too thick, but other than that its perfect. Although, I think it only works in this case because I don't need for the foam to be flexible. All of the red you see below is painted on. I don't have the spraycans with me at the moment but if you're curious about what kind of paint I'm using I can snap a picture of them next time.

Yeah, I see what you mean. I remember building it to have that slight angle along the chest, but its almost impossible to notice now with that first layer of black foam over it .__. I guess then the torso will be only loosely based on the RG design. xP I'm hoping that the yellow collar will help also.

Some of the supplies I ordered finally came in the mail today, so I'm finally able to work on the torso again. I always felt that RX-78's blues were too bright for my liking, so I went with a navy blue that was somewhat closer to the Ver.Ka. The red area is still missing a couple of pieces.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

Handpainting usually goes on thick enough that you don't have to worry about the foam absorbing it too much. Spraypaint is much thinner and requires a sealing layer to prevent absorbtion.

Re: Gundam RX-78 WIP

It's finally starting to look like a gundam! I just need to make the yellow collar and some minor tweaks and it'll be done with the torso :D
I got started on the backpack today too. Simplified it quite a bit, but it'll still have a lot of details which I'm looking forward to. I'm trying to make it as light as possible because the chest with the shoulders added is already quite heavy...
