I have just recently started on to a kick of playing some vintage games. Kind of going back and picking up a few games that I wanted as a kid, but couldn't get.

So far I've picked up Super Mario 2 and 3, Contra, and Super Punch out on SNES (had MT punchout on NES and always loved that one)

So give me some ideas of what to look for. The Angry Video Game Nerd lets me know which ones to stay away from :lol

What ones did you absolutely love growing up?

I didn't have either growing up (most of my gaming was on the Atari 2600, the Sega Genesis, and the C64) but I did have some NES/SNES favorites when I went over to my friends' houses.

    Contra
    Super Mario World
LoZ: A Link to the Past
    Super Mario RPG
    Dragon Warrior

and of course, Super Mario Bros. :)

    Super Mario (of course)
    Legend of Zelda
    Castlevania
Ring King (I loved knocking the person up in the air and out of the ring! LOL)
    Mega Man (Great music!)
Contra - Jeez, i still remember that boss with the swirling tentacles with the lit up weak points.

F1 Exhaust heat....Mode 7 scaling gone nuts, but a fun game, with some pretty silly driver names......Ayrton Sendup was one i believe, and it could have been Nigel Manson, but i cant be sure, it was a long time ago lol.

The Star Wars trilogy, really good platformers IMO.

Streetfighter II....in any guise, i slay this game lol.

Always loved this machine, the ONLY Nintendo i did truly love!

A link to the past is still in my opinion the greatest Zelda game they've ever made with Ocarina of time in second place. I can't recommend them enough.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, Double Dragon, Super Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II Turbo, Blades of Steel. Man I could go on, they were both amazing systems.

Hell, I still have an NES sitting in my parents basement somewhere, I should dig it out and replace the connector on it.

When I was a teenager, I used to work at McDonald's part time. We had a SNES set up in the breakroom and on every break, we'd be sitting there playing Street Fighter. We did a couple of tourneys as well. You really learn how cheap some coworkers can be when you hear hadouken 80 times in a single round.

Never had a NES, I threw my chips in with Sega and the Master System, but got a SNES as soon as they hit the shops. So much goodness on that little grey slab

Legend of Zelda - A link to the Past
    Secret of Mana
    Mario Kart
    Cybernator (Assault Suits Valken)
    Super Metroid

On the NES, I really loved/hated Blaster Master. Game was impossible. Super Mario Brothers 3 is still one of the best games ever made.

For SNES, obviously Link to the Past and ChronoTrigger are the heavy favorites here.

I really loved Uniracers, but I think I'm the only person on the planet that actually played that game.

If you want a game that's amazing but will make you want to rip out your hair and throw the controller at the TV, grab battletoads.

NES: Super Mario Bros. 3. Closest I've ever gotten to knowing what it would be like to fly.

SNES: Super Metroid. The music, the environments, the mood, the enemies, the final showdown. A place for everything, and everything in it's place. Super Metroid is my favorite 2D game of all time.

Ninja Gaiden (although it was IMPOSSIBLE for me)
    Golgo 13
    Super Star Wars
    SMB 1-3
    Contra

And so on, and so forth....there were a lot of great NES games.

I actually ended up paying about 80 quid for Super Star Wars.......those were the days!

One of the WORST SNES games i ever played, but looked forward to forever was Jurassic Park......it was repetetive and just hideous...

    Chrono Trigger
    Secret of Mana
    Super R-Type

Avoid Milon's Secret Castle like the plague. That game is stupid hard and doesn't do much to show you what to do.

I played that one and the similarly designed Out Of This World on PC, but yes, very cool. Same with Blackthorne, actually. Played all of those on PC.

    Legend of Zelda
Final fantasy 2 and 3 and mystic quest
    secret of mana
    secret of evermore
    chrono trigger
    mario RPG
    7th saga
    shadowrun
Cybernator (I didn't know there were so many fans of it)
    Megaman X
    super metroid
there are others but these are the ones off the top of my head for the snes sadly I wasn't into RPGs when the NES was out. It disapointed the crap out of me that square didn't continue putting out collections of their games like the Final Fantasy Origins and such. They skimped out on FF3 (japanese release) in one of them despite including it in the Japanese collection. Then they give it to us as a nintendo ds game. I'd still like to see secret of evermore and secret of mana in a collection.

NES - River Raid, spent hours on that. Also there's a weird game called Bible Buffet, It's a ripoff of Candyland, but for some reason I'm addicted to it.

I used to play Donkey Kong Country into the wee hours of the morning!

I have a soft spot for Starfleet Academy too. And the SNES version of DooM was decent.

Mind you, back then I also had a Sega Genesis system with the 32x upgrade. Star Wars Arcade was one I played for hours.

Games I still play today are.

    NES:

Contra: At one point in the past I could beat it without dying. I can still beat it with 3 lives.

Super Mario Bros: I can still beat it with one life.

The Legend of Zelda: It's always fun.

The Taito version of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: I love this game because it has puzzles in it and at the time was Indy-ish :lol, even though the controls are garbage.

Mike Tysons Punchout: I can still pwn Mike to this day.

Blue Marlin: I love fishin' games.

    SNES:

All the Super Star Wars games: They're all so good.

Super Punchout!: Another game I can still breeze through without being knocked down.

A Link to the Past: What's not to love?!?

Super Black Bass: Fishin' games were great on the SNES.

Jimmy Houstons' Bass Tournament USA: You get the idea by now, but this game is different than any other because you fish above the water and you never know where the fish are. It's great!!

Indiana Jones Greatest Adventures: Still the best Indy game IMHO.

Street Fighter II Turbo: I'm a Boss..

Mortal Kombat II: I still play online on my PS3 every day and destroy 99% of the people I play against.

NBA JAM: Great game for parties.

    Super Mario World: Duhhhh.

The list would be endless. I still own a bunch of systems. I have a Colecovision with 85 games for crying out loud :lol
