Farscape John Crichton. (leather outfit.)

I nabbed this picture a few good yonks ago from one of the ebay auctions, unfortunately its the only decent picture I have of a screen used holster (I forgot I had this one actually, had to go searching though my many backup folders on my computer, lol).
0515_06_AERYN_STUNTLEGHOLSTER1.jpg

It looks as though the leg buckles are the same YKKs as the vest, though the webbing is not. It does look like fairly standard webbing though so shouldn't be too hard to find.

Something to mention though is that buckle from the holster to the belt is not the same. It's a smaller sized version of the buckles used on Crichton's season 3/4 short black jacket. as seen in this picture:
IMG_0512.jpg

Again this is something I've never been able to find - I don't even know the make of this one, all I know is that it's a front release buckle rather than a side release.

Those costume makers didn't make it easy for us, hehe.

Well, ok, it's been three months, and I haven't lost a single pound. ;( I don't have my pistols done. :( I don't have the money to order a cotume, and I still am yet to get started on the holsters, and belt. :( Oh, and I only have a little under 2 months until the event. :(

However, I HAVE NOT GIVEN UP.

I have bout a replica vest off of ebay. The red on it looks to be the wrong color, but then again, it is close to what most people do theirs in, so wall it may not look quite right to me, at least some folks will like it. (and it does look cool.) I got it in the size I should be by the con. (in other words it doen't come close to fiting yet.) The back is way off, but it should be covered by the coat. (with any luck I'll come up with something for the coat by then) And I actually kind of like what they did with the back better then the original anyways. over all, it is actually very well made, and I really do love most of it. However, the shoulders are awful. :( It looks like I have wings. The stick out like 3 or 4 inches from my shoulders. :( I can't saw leather, my Moms machine wont do leather. (and she said she is too afraid of messing it up, so she wont touch it.) And I can't find anyone around here to do the work. ;( (plus I have to wait until I get down to weight, before I do any mods on it, so that I can be sure that it will fight right. )

If all else fails I have a few back up plans.

Plan B would be to print the pannels of the vest, on t-shirt paper (the make it for black t-shirts now.) And iron then on a black t-shirt. (kind of like one of those tuxedo t-shirts. :lol)

Plan C, If it comes down to the wire, and I still can't pull it all together. I could (and I would hate to have to do this) Duct tape it. Take a black sleeveless t-shirt, cut it up the front, and do all the leather panels, in black, and red, duct tape. And I could pick up a black trench coat at the thrift store, and do the sleeves, and yoke, in black duct tape.

I know that all of the above is not up to RPF standers. But they are fun, cheep, and easy was to get-er-done. And they are all better then just giving up. :)

Does anyone have any good picture of the leather belt pouches? I've looked, nad looked, nad i can't find any really good ones. A lot of folks say they look like the M16 pouches, but what I can see in the few bad pics I've seen they are a little different, so I would really like to see for myself. I'm really trying to get this thing wrapped up, so please help me out with this.

This is Crichton's pouch, I managed to bag a screen used from a Creation Ebay auction many moons ago. Other character's pouches were different. If you'd like pictures from different angles let me know ;)

WOW! That is fantastic. :) That's a huge help.

The side release buckle on that, doesn't look like the YKK Buckle they used on a lot of the other stuff. Can you take a pic with it open so I can get some idea of what the "male" Half of the buckle looks like, so I know what kind of side release buckle I need to be looking for? And, yes, some pics from different angles would help figure out how it's made. Also, can you give me some idea of size. (for the pouch over all, or at least how wide that strap on the front is, that holds the buckle.)

Boy I don't ask for much do I? :lol (I'm just excited, this is the first time I have ever got a true idea of what the pouch looks like. :) )

Okay, lots of pictures ...

Firstly, you're right the buckle isn't the same as the ones on the belt and the vest, it looks much more like a standard side release buckle ...

I also got the tape measure out for you to give you a rough idea of the overall size of it.

I'm not sure what the holes are for. My guess would be that the pouches were to hold the battery packs for radio mics (since almost all the main characters had them, would make sense) in that case, the holes would probably be for leads. However that is pure speculation.

Anyway, while I was at taking pictures this afternoon, I thought it high time I actually took some of my Crichton costume, and they can be found here ...

Hope these help :)

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. :) Those are great pics, and a huge hellp. :)

Your costume is outstanding. I wish I could afford one that nice. Mine is (for this outing) going to be kind of ruff, but I do hope to upgrade a piece at a time, so that one day, I will have a better costume then the one I'm working on, though I don't it will every be as nice as yours.

Jason, are you putting this together for Marcon? I will be there dude!! Hope to see you there.

Sounds like your options are: Learn to sew or spend some dough.

No offense here but it doesn't sound like you are ready for this undertaking. I mean I'm hearing a bunch of negatives.

It's too expensive
I can't afford it
I can't sew.
And my fave... Too much work?

Most of the people on this board didn't know how to do what they did until they taught themselves through trial and error, and yes, wasting money on trying new things. Most of these costumes we on this board put together become labors of love and we do what we can with the money, but above all we work our fingers to the bone trying to make things as best as we can with whatever resources we have.

Also, I should point out, if you get something for cheap, it's going to look cheap. As someone who builds costumes for people for commission, the word "cheap" is almost offensive to me. I get emails from people asking if I can make something cheaper than someone else all the time. I usually tell them "no, I don't do cheap, cheap is for Wal-Mart"...

Again, no offense, and I apologize if I've read this wrong, but it sounds like you just want something handed to you. Not likely that this will happen. You need to suck it up and do it, or just let it go. This isn't a cheap hobby my any means. It takes alot of work, alot of money and most of all... Lots of patience.

yup.. i agree. if you want it to look better have to spend TONS of money & time & effort. ;)

And I still don't completely agree, but I'm not going down that road again. (I already replayed to that on page one.)

I can tell you that pieces of my version of this costume, is going to suck this time out, but by the next time, I hope to have upgraded it. Even then, I'm not going to spend my life savings on it. It's a costume, that I'm only going to get to wear once, and a great, great, wile, to some very miner conventions. I'm never going to the big ones like Dragon Con, or Comic Con. I just go to the local stuff, where the costumes range from then occasionally very good, to the all to common, very, very, bad. (usually off the rack at the costume shop, Mom's closet, a thrift store, or Victoria's secret.) I'm not about to spend a "TON" to impress folk, whom get most of there costumes for less then they spend on every day close. (if anything at all.)

I'm going to try to get hte correct boots, and I'm going to try very hard to get the holsters, and pouches, made before this con, and to do them as accurately as I can. I'm still working on home made comms for myself, and the rest of my crew. I'm still working on the pistols for myself, and my girl. (Had some set backs.)

If I can loose the weight, I'm going to wear the leather pants I got at the thrift store for $12. Are they accurate..... Nope, but they are real leather, and all that 90% of the folks that even remember the show, will recall, is that he wore leather pants, most of them will have never even noticed all the very, fancy stitching. (though yes it would have been nice for it to have been on mine, I really can live just fine without it.) If I can't get into them, I will look for another pair, or just wear black pants this tiem, and save the leather ones for next time.

I got a vest off ebay. It had the wrgon buckles, but I replaced them (myself) with the correct ones. I made the metal covers for them. (I just have to glue them on) The vest is WAY too big in the sholders. (it stuck out like 3 inches.), but we took off the piping, and cut off the excess. It still doesn't set on my shoulder as well as it should but it looks WAY better then it did. The back is way in accurate, but I'm not really worried about that. The front looks great, other then the fact that it has nylon straps in stead of the set belt straps (I bout the right stuff, but I don't have a way of putting it on there, because, I can't, nor can I find someone, to remove the ones that are on there, and put the right stuff on.) But hey, a lot of the high end once still use the wrong straps.

Sadly, I doubt I will be able to make, or order a coat. :( I realy, really, want one. I really don't care if it's all that accurate. It could not have the descriptive stitching, and it could us the wrong straps. (hey the vest I have does so it would match. :)) I actually wanted to find a leather jacket at the thrift store, to modify, but I waited too long, and now the thrift stores don't have any leather coats out. :( And I don't have enough time, or money to order one. It's too bad, because the coat is my favorite part of this costume by far, but it is what it is, and we can't have everything we want in life. Even if I had the money, I probably wouldn't order one, because I can think of a lot more responsible things to spend $400. on.(I will have one, some day, but I just wont have a crew to wear it with. :( ) But, a lot of folks do this costume without the coat.

The rest of my crew is doing very well with their costumes though. :) And they are all making them themselves, and almost no budget. :) My girl now has 3 pair of pleather pants she has found at the thrift store, and she has tons of very Aeryn like tops. Our chiana, has her costume almost made. She's going with the modified black out stretchy outfit, with the fuzzy yarn, and she even ordered the contacts. Our D'Argo has most of his done, and he was doing the head tails last weekend. That was brilliant He filled old socks with card board until he had the right shape, then sprayed them with a can of "clear liquid Electrical tape", He then removed the sock ,and wound up, with tentacles that where very skin toned, and had a very skin like look, and feel. :) once stuffed, they will look like very expensive silicon applications, but for less then $10. (I even told him if he needs more stuffing, he could always get dirt cheep stuffed animals, at the thrift store, and take them apart for the stuffing, and use the left over stuffed animal skins to make costumes for their pats. :)) Our Zahn just got started a few weeks ago, and she is coming a long quite well. (she's the craftiest one of the group, so I have no doubt she will surpass us all.)

Your really can do a great costume on a budget. Some times it will be dead on, some times it wont, but in the end, it's just a costume. I would rather put food on my plate, and a roof over my head, then be out in the cold, starving, with a perfect costume, that most folks couldn't tell from the cheep one.

Well, I didn't pull it off in time. I have leather pants, but they don't fit. I have the vest, but it does not fit, and the mods that need to be done to it are not done yet. I have the boots now too. I have a pulse pistol. (My old one, not the new one I'm working on, I don't have that done yet either. :( )

I have no coat, belt, holster, etc. :( (didn't see the point in finishing them right now, since I can't fit the costume)

It actually had nothing to do with the money (or the lack there of), or skill (or the lack there of), that many said would be the cases of failure, it actually just came down to my inability to loose the weight. :(

I never imagined it would be this hard to loose weight at 33. If I had lost the weight, I might have been able to pull the rest off, but a few weeks ago, after I realized that I had more pounds to loose, then I had time left until the convention, I decided to shelf this project, and make other plans.

With the help of my Mom, we through together John's khaki outfit from the first season, out of modified cloths from the thrift store. We had it done in about a week. (well if you actually added up the hours we spent actually working on it, it probably wouldn't have been more the a day, or so, but it was spread out over a week. )

It's fare from perfect, but at least I wont be totally letting down my crew. (even if I did let myself down. :()

I didn't get the holster done for my girlfriend either, but I will have the home made comms ready by the con, for my crew. With a great deal of luck I will have a pulse pistol ready for my girlfriend as well, but it wont be all that I wanted it to be. I made all the mods for the lights, etc. but I had to rush the paint job, and as a result there are some small air bubbles wholes etc. that I didn't see before I painted it, that I should have filled, but just didn't have time to go back and do. (right now, anywyas.)

With time, and discipline, I could have done this, but with a lack of both, I will at best be a K-mart John Crichton this time out.

I will however, keep working on the leather outfit (and weight loss) over the summer, and wall I may never have a crew to costume with me again, I will one day have my leather John costume. It may take many more months, and I may have to wear it solo, but I will do it one day.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I finally got chance to wear my Mk. II Crichton leathers all together for the first time since they were finished this sunday, and thought I'd share a picture of two.

Sorry, the picture quality is a bit hinky, but thats a combination of my ageing camera and poor lighting at the venue. Anyway ...

And there we go. It's a great costume to wear, lots of fun, even if very few people recognise it these days.

WOW! That looks great.

I'm still working on mine, so thanks for bumping up the thread. I've got the leather pants (not screen accurate, but the yare black leather pants. ) The vest (I got the modes done, to the cheep one I bout off ebay, it's not purfect but I'm very happy with it..... well except the back, but that will be covered by the coat.) I have the boots. (it's funny, they are the right make, and model, but everyone says they should come from the store with yellow stitching at the bottom, and that they blacked it out for the show, but mine came all black, and ready for costuming. :) )

I'm still working on the guns (not much left to go), I'm still working on the belt (the buckle is done, I just have to find some 2" leather, that is long enough to go around me.) I want a much better holster, I need to do the pouch. And the two most important things I need the coat (Witch I can't make, or afford) And I still need to loose at least 60 lbs. :(

I wont have a chance to were this costume for another 6 months or so, I I am still hoping to pull this off. (if not for my next convention, then some day. )

in saw this bumped thread ...and read all through lol. I've always loved Farscape and the costumes were just amazing on the show.
I'd considered PKBarbie as she is known, Scorpius's assistant - the one with the red hair.

Then when commander graza came along i thought..yes i have the boobs for that! :D

but i never got round to either of them...

Now if i went back the show, id go all out and do Warlord Arkna (sp) as she is incredible!

teekay - your John outfit is ..perfection.

Jason -
I find with any costume, if you want it right, it does cost money..lots of money. Its impossible to recreate a screen used costume that used expensive materials by using cheap materials.
Ive tried before, as im not the wealthiest person and it will show.I never felt happy in them and ended up saving to make better versions.

If a costume uses leather, then you use leather, or the best quality synthetic leather , which can often cost nearly as much.
i'd rather take longer to save up and make an accurate costume, than rush to make a bad one. I feel better in a costume that makes people go 'wow', than in one than makes people go 'ok......'

I understand the not being able to sew due to bad eyesight. That can suck. I have disabilities that have slowed down my costume making from 1 a month to 1 a year. Not sure if you mentioned it but does your girlfriend sew? if not then perhaps she can learn. Its a great skill to have and will make all the difference in your costumes, than trying to botch round the problem ( i did shudder with the mention of staples!).

I have the utmost respect for the costume makers. From the professionals that do it for TV, and movie, too those that do it for fun, at conventions. However, I'm not a serious costumer. I have been a perfectionist throughout most of my life, but I find this is one area that I can settle for Good enough.

My old Photography teacher had a saying "you can put all the bell, and bows you want to, on a pile of dog due, but in the end you still just have a pile of dog due." I'm not much of a looker, and I don't have much money to send. I will never spend a ton of money, I don't have, to dress up this guy. Besides if I put that kind of money into a costume, I would never take it out of the house. I buy all my every day close at the thrift store. If I'm not willing to pay much more then $10. for a pair of pants that I wear all the time, then I'm not going to spend hundreds on a pair, that I'm going to wear once, or twice, at a convention.

If I ever become one of those people that pays $300. for a pair of jeans, then I might consider paying a ton of money on a costume. (Yeah, I'll never be one of those idiots.)

As for my girlfriend, I am no longer with her, and I don't have anyone that can sow, that is willing to take this on, or who can work leather. I'll just have to come up with something that I can do. Or find a way to buy one of the Pendragan coats. (I hate to spend that kind of money, but I might actually wear one of johns leather coats, as an everyday coat, because they look so darn cool. :) ) But again, I would never spend that kind of money on the vest, or the pants.

And as for your Farscape costume ideas........ :) :) :) Yes please, and post lots of pics. :) :) :) I love red heads, and have always been a fan of Scorpies aid. And wall I wasn't much of a fan of Graza, I was a big fan of her costume. ;) And, Warlord Arkna's out fight, is just really cool. (not as "sexy" as the other ones, but would turn heads for other reasons.)

awe..i understand....its the seamstress in me that shuddered at staples thats all. lol.
Its funny..id never pay stupid monies for fashion..but will go crazy for costumes. I think its the theatrical side of me, wish i could wear that stuff all the time. The leather coat Aeryn has for example, id that as an every day coat.
Im wanting to have made Selene( from Underworld evolution), her coat from that id kill for..and id wear that everywhere too! i made her first film one out of expensive pleather, but id pay to have a leather one made, just because it is so beautiful.

if i ever do one of those farscape costume i so will post pics here. I even know the designer who made some of Arkna's costume...it was cast latex, plus real croc skin (like scorpies costume) and then pvc ..and more pvc lol.
Scarran and Peackeepers were into their fetish style lol
