Farnsworth Discussion

Farnsworth Rivet.jpg

Leena Farnsworth.jpg

There's another good shot of the rivet on the back of the main Farnsworth in 'The Ones You Love', when Leena's watching Artie have his psychotic break.

Finally have all the component parts together so I can get this done. But a couple of questions before I break out the hot glue:

The sound module on the first post is no longer available from the website. Does anyone have any details of what it was? (Since I'll have to try and source something locally anyway).

Secondly, screen options: I'd love to Ahoudini's half silvered version but not sure about how to achieve the half-silvered effect. Any pointers/links?

Cheers

I need an opinion. This is the easiest part for me to acquire, as I have both Fender and MXR parts floating around the shop, but I'm not certain which knob is more accurate.
The knob on the left is the 10001 MXR, and the one on the right is from a Fender J Bass.

The fluting, skirt width, and marks are quite different.
Also, total height and skirt thickness are different.

Which do you think that I should go with?
Thanks.

(Sorry for the crap pics, mobile camera.)

Ironically, that knob is the last part I need. It's been difficult sourcing it in the UK, and I've ordered one from the states via Ebay. I'm really hoping it turns out to be the right size.

I would say the one on the left (10001 MXR) is the right one. If you check the first page of this thread, you can see it quite clearly in the pictures. Other people have also named it as the 10001 MXR.

Thanks!
Let me know if the one you ordered isn't correct, and we can work out shipping you one.

The only thing that I don't either have on-hand, or have a line on, is of course, the faceplate.
I'll probably just go with the plastic one from Etsy, as I do not posses the equipment to do it properly, until any pop-up in the Junkyard.

Brother William- I just spray painted the back of a lab glass screen (the same glass evaporating dish a lot of people are using ) with stainless steel rattle can spray paint (Plastikote brand, I think) building up layers slowly, testing the light behind after every few coats until it looked right. I got it too heavy at one point and so I had to clean it off with acetone and start over. About 6 light coats, I think, is about right. This should work fine with any glass screen, like the Ford radio dial glass, also.

My faceplate was from etsy.

Finally getting back round to my Farnsworth build, but I've not yet found a good lens and some of the options mentioned in the thread seem to be unavailable. Does anyone have a recommendation where I might find something that would work? I'm trying something a little different with this build, and I'll post more as I get closer.

Thanks,
Jim

That glass lab dish I mentioned several times is always available.. its glass, and is standard lab equipment. It even comes in various sizes.

Tin Rectangular Window 5.5" by 3.7" hinged
I found some VERY cheap tins that would work for the farnsworth, 5.5" x 3.7", (from what I can find the actual farnsworth is 6.0" x 3.5")
I have been looking up this website specialty bottle, and from what I can see it seems like a legitimate website. of course the front of these tins are clear, but you could always paint over them.Specialtybottlefarnsworthflyboxclear.jpg
