Farnsworth Discussion

Well for those of you in the uk! Looks like Eddie is signing in November at the nec!

cool.
Eddie, Joanne and Allison did a free promo signing at ExCel when WH13 first started airing. Lovely people and very friendly.
Just need Saul to come to the UK........... :cool

I'm hoping more of them will show up, it's early days yet! This just means I'm going to have to get my farnsworth built!

I havent got my faceplates made up yet, my brothers shop gets super busy close to the end of the year so water jet time is at a premium. I got bored waiting so I decided to make an alternative for now. I read here somewhere that someone used a brass door kickplate from lowes so I started there. I got all the holes laid out and where my cuts needed to be. BTW, its almost impossible to find a real brass one so the one i got was aluminum with a brass look coating. The biggest pain in the arse was the large hole for the dome lens, I had to but a special cutter. It was very slow going but it came out pretty good. Now with this kickplate there will be no weathering or aging like brass does, im not much with an airbrush so I decided to make this rendition a stylized Farnsworth. I left the outer and inner case looking new. The faceplate is shiney and its hard to tell in the pics but the circle around the center knobs where the numbers will be is like chrome instead of brass. Im not sure what I plan to do about the speaker grill but for the glass bead in the center I plan on using a peephole lens from a door to look more futuristic like a video camera lens. I still have plenty of drilling and polishing and assembly but its keeping me busy until i get my real faceplate. Hope you enjoy the pics.

I bought some small sheets of brass on eBay and used part of one to make a mini-Farnsworth. I cut the main hole using drill bits and a Dremel cutting disc then cleaned the hole up with the Dremel and a file. Very slow but it worked.

Possible Spoilers!

Did anyone else enjoy seeing some Farnsworth features confirmed in the mid-season finale?

First up the brown centre dial, which is used to switch between transmissions:

FarnsworthChannelChange.jpg

Also Artie's Farnsworth-tapping device which seems to be connected via a crocodile clip on the push-button, and also plugged into the side jacks. I think it needs to be in close-proximity to another Farnsworth to intercept the transmission since he was lurking behind Mrs F to spy on her call.

FarnsworthHack.jpg

So much for the "can't be cracked, hacked or tapped" rule!

Guess it can't be hack, cracked, or tapped unless you do it with another Farnsworth. :)

Actually that is the "tracker" attachment that Claudia built ages ago and was connected to the Farnsworth with a second set of sockets near the top. Just look back through the thread.

Most real hobby shops as well as places like ACE and OSH hardware stores carry assorted small sheets of brass, alum and copper.
They are usually in the same display with the metal tubing and rods.

I used an all 1/16" thick brass kick plate from OSH to make all the brackets and plates for a Pulse Rifle.

I guess I need to rephrase that, its almost impossible to find real brass where I am. I did look online but in the thickness I want I only found pieces like 6"x8" or 6"x12" for $15-$20 plus shipping. I guess it would have been better to say that it is almost impossible to find any real brass near me or at a reasonable price. not gonna pay $20 for a small piece of brass and do all the work myself or take a chance on screwin it up when I can buy a finished faceplate for $50. I like workin with cheap alternatives to see whats out there and how well they may work. At $6 the piece I bought was enough to make 2 plates and cheap enough so that if I screwed them up it was no major loss. Thanks for the info though

Mind. Blown.

I thought it looked somewhat familiar when I saw the finale, also no need; just re-watched that episode earlier :cool

Ok need some opinions here-

First off- what exactly is going on with the cabochon crystal on the screen used prop?
Looks like there's some distortion under it. It looks like its Either frosted on the bottom or some type of crumbled up tinfoil.

As for the opinion- I'm working on augmenting my old Farnsworth (new faceplate and custom innards) and I'm on the fence about the crystal.
The screen used prop has that frosted tinfoil thin going on under it...but I've seen some of the replicas created with a perfectly transparent bottom (which looks very nice).

Should I go with transparent or the frosted bottom?

Post 2013 has a pic of his build with a cabachon that has a mirrored bottom and it looks pretty good. i have seen the screen used props that look like there is something under the cabachon, maybe how its glued or something. At times they look good and at times they look thrown together. i think it comes down to personal preference, is your farnsworth going to look really worn and weathered or fairly new and in good condition?

Yeah, the cabochons I had came with a mirrored bottom, but somehow it looks too clean compared to the one on the actual prop.

My farnsworth will be weathered so i might just opt for the frosted bottom.
Ive been thinking about drilling a small hole on the bottom to give the sense of some artifact inside the crystal....Possibly a little portal for the camera under the faceplate.

Ill see how it looks.

How are you guys lining up and measuring for the two phono jacks at the side?

You need to make sure you clear the pushbutton inside to start with. Also if the tracker attachment fitted Artie's unmodified Farnsworth then the two sockets must be the same distance apart as the plugs on one of those dual banana plug adapters. (when we'd seen the tracket previously it was plugged into extra "sockets' that had been put in the upper side of the case.) Other than that you could get the basic position by eye.

I had thought about something under the crystal too, maybe even a small dot of paint to give the illusion of a camera or viewpiece.

I bought some small potentiometers on ebay for the left and center knobs. They are less than 1 inch long or 24mm and the shaft is 1/4 inch or 6mm. They turn about 330 degrees so its nice to have a realistic feel for the knobs on the farnsworth. The best part is I got 6 of these for $2.59 shipped and took less than 3 weeks to get them from asia. here are some pics in case anyone is interested and the ebay seller is newkitty1116.
