Farnsworth Discussion

So I'm awaiting the new faceplate and wanting to get mine finally ready. I am hooking up a small screen inside and want to know this. I need to find a 2 way switch type of thing, so I can push the button, have the sound chip and light flash, push it again, change the power over to the screen so it can run its video file, then shut off on its own and then the first push goes back to the ring. Or if there is enough room maybe a timer for the ring and so maybe 3 functions :)

Anyone know of a chip that will do that and it needs to be pretty small. Thanks

I saw a post on here where one person set up their farnsworth so that when they pushed the button the ring sound went off and when they pushed it again the red light continued to flash and when they pushed it a third time it cancelled everything. Something like that might work along with a seperate button to work the video. You might be able to use a push type putton under the center knob. It would probably retain the ability to turn the knob but when pushed it could activate the video. Just an idea but im sure someone would have a better one as I am not great with electronics.

...
I was just wondering if anyone has had a notion to make styrene or resin plate or Farnsworth kit. Over the years I've learned how to make wood, plastic and resin look and feel absolutely real, and would be happy with such a thing. One secret to making plastic and wood look like a thick sheet of brass, steel or aluminum is to actually sheet (laminate) it with a thin sheet of the metal. ...

Thanks!
Robb

Hi Robb,

I did have that notion. I was going to make a few in resin to use during my build, so as not to scratch up the beautiful brass bits that are shipping soon from the recent run. Anxious to start building, I may take the AI file from post #1980 and start playing. I'll post progress when there is some.

started to put mine together as a test fitting, little mad :angry that one of the wire leads for the push button broke off when I bent it to fit it in the box (any idea if it can be soldered back on and work right? if not I have another idea)

ordered a new center knob, correct color this time and right height. and still waiting on the newer center crystal I ordered.

Jedibugs - good call on the ford glass, fits like a glove. Though it still does worry me about it breaking since it's glass

You shouldn't have any problems soldering it back on. I had issues with speaker wires constantly breaking so simply replaced the wire with better stuff.

I think unless you're using the Farnsworth as a baseball that it'll be fine. Sitting on a shelf or general handling shouldn't be an issue..

While I waited on my Russ faceplate I ordered a black plastic one off of etsy. I just got my brass faceplate yesterday and comparing them they are very close. The button holes need to be opened up but besides that very happy. Now to give it a brass finish. My center knobs arrived. They are brown and look great except for the white line and that the need to have a few mm trimed off. Tomorrow I will be putting up a Junkyard thread for my extra knobs, red bulb, and lens. Thanks to this thread I have everything to put together except for the Wheatley box.

Thanks!

Greg

How do the brass plates from Russ look? He does good work. I have one of the original run done early on in the thread.

I have some of his other stuff like Dr Who sonics. One can always expect great quality work from him. That plate should come up a treat with a little ageing. .... Or are you going to go with the new look? I'm taking so long to finish up the last part of mine that I won't need to artificially age the faceplate.

Most likely going to age it, though I have like no experience doing that or doing a proper paint job. So I'll be taking that process SLOW and probably be asking for some help/tips.

I like how Reel Fakes came out that he posted in the sale thread in the junkyard.

Yes it is the stage mine has been at for ages. Painting is not my strong point and I don't want to ruin it. I have parts to make a second one which I'm going to make a tracker version with add-on antenna dish and black screen. I do have the QMx one for reference though I think they've taken the faceplate ageing a little too far. I have some of the parts for Claudia's version too.

A few of my props have stalled at the painting/finishing stage. I really need to get my workshop set up.

I like how DARTH SABERS came out that he posted in the sale thread in the junkyard.

Wait, I haven't posted mine in the junkyard thread. I haven't even reciever my faceplate yet.
However I do have my previous Farnsworth which I posted waaaaay back in this thread.

Has anyone worked out the most effective way of securing the faceplates into the case? I have seen in this thread that some are using posts in the case and on the plate. Is this the best way? Thanks

Possible Spoilers!

Did anyone else enjoy seeing some Farnsworth features confirmed in the mid-season finale?

First up the brown centre dial, which is used to switch between transmissions:

Also Artie's Farnsworth-tapping device which seems to be connected via a crocodile clip on the push-button, and also plugged into the side jacks. I think it needs to be in close-proximity to another Farnsworth to intercept the transmission since he was lurking behind Mrs F to spy on her call.

So much for the "can't be cracked, hacked or tapped" rule!
