Farnsworth Discussion

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Has anyone looked into ponoko.com for cutting the faceplates of this and the Farnsworth's Farnsworth? I just remembered the site.

I keep missing someone selling the faceplates . I am going to see what i can do to get me a few made here through a trophy shop or something. I just want a static prop and maybe make the holder as well. it's crazy to pay 200+ for something like that when the parts can be had all over the place...lol

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

A faceplate take a considerable amount of work. first the basic shape and cutouts have to be done, I had mine laser cut. Then the recess for the middle knob must be machined, after that you have to find an engraver willing to engrave it, this isn't easy, I got turned down a lot before I found someone who would do it.

None of the suppliers I worked with would just do 1 or 2, I had to have 20+

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I was actually asking about the liver of sulfur gel but thanks for the great tips on the brown paint. Sorry the gel wasn't the panacea that the advert made it out to be.

Thanks.

Are you referring to the face plates or the boxes?

The face plates where trial and error with the liver of sulfur gel that mainly turned the brass a copper color, only one of the 3 plates I was working with had the right look but not enough oxidation.
I ended up just air brushing Testors Model Master Burnt Siena and flat black then used some steel wool then a rag for final buffing.
For the really grungy spots before air brushing I dabbed on the 2 colors with a q-tip then used acetone on a rag to remove most of it leaving the thick blotches that some tools seam to get with lot's of handling, after that is when I airbrushed over everything.

The box was espresso paint (3-4 layers) then used a sea sponge to apply the antiquing metallic brown gel, the metallic brown looked far to gold so I over sprayed it with the espresso again then used steel wool then buffed with a rag.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

It took quite a while to effect the plating even applied directly.
I was expecting instant patina like in the video.
It also caused any tiny bit's of the steel wool to leave black marks.

Tried it hot, cold, with ammonia added.

As I said one of the plates did look pretty good after several attempts, I think it was the plate from the first run with the incorrect engraving.
Might have something to do with the type of metal.

I did wipe them down with acetone and lacquer thinner (not at the same time) then some steel wool before trying the gel in case there was a lacquer finish on the plates.

The nice thing is that it comes right off with a little bit of the steel wool so you can rework areas.

I, too, wished I had been able to get a faceplate or 2 before the bomb dropped...oh well.

anyone see that QMX one went for $610 on ebay, crazy...

the photos were nice though, seems they did put a rivet on the back where the logo was, though the case looks more black than brown.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

Got my box. The faceplates should be done next week. Still trying to get the switches and stuff without paying $20.00 shipping on a $2.79 part.

Re: Warehouse 13 Prop Research - The Farnsworth

I just got a bunch of the red lights, only needed one but wanted to reduce the shipping per piece price. I'll be listing the remainder in the JY as soon as I find a suitable padded envelope and the price.
