Kids wanted to pick out there own colors and designs..... And the last pic is just for the heck of it.... :D

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I wish I had my patience too.... :/ I can't stand the detailing....

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I plan on using the JFcustom templates to build a bio out of foam as you did. I got pepakura installed tonight and started playing around with the files, and I'll get started on a cardstock version for practice. Did you have to mod the templates much to make them work with foam? How thick is your foam?

Thanks!

If you use JFcustom templates then you won't have to convert them to foam because that's what he does for you. :)

1/4" foam... Good luck!

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Doh! :facepalm Gotcha. Thanks! This is going to be a steep learning curve for me...

Just checked my foam, and it is 1/4" thick, so I am happy about that. Now, to just free up some time...

Any advice on what order to assemble the pieces? I assume build the crown first, and then attach the outer rim to it, but from there I'm not too sure...

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Are you talking about the helmet? If this is your first foam build I would start with the shins and do the chest and helmet last.

But....starting assembly is a personal preference. You can start with the top and just work your way down. I started with the large center top, put the top half together, then the entire bottom, then connected. But, it's all in what you are comfortable seeing and executing.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Sorry, yes, I was talking about the helmet. Your approach totally makes sense.

Good point starting with something more simple like the shins. I'll take a look at them, and give 'em a go!

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I had a chance to work on some stuff....

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Wow. Fabulous work. Is that a baseball cap minus the bill I see inside the bio?

And where did you get that HUGE Star Wars poster???

Yepper.... the baseball cap idea I saw on indiefilmgeek's thread with his 10 year old Predator build. The link is on the first post.

The Star Wars poster was off of Thinkgeek.com when it was in stock. It's 10.5' wide and it's wallpaper. :D

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I love how this is so original! Really off topic but I have that Star Wars poster and I noticed something weird on mine and it's on yours aswell. Haha not sure if it's supposed to be there but see Luke's left hand? Looks more like a Wookie's hand, ahah!

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

They are called poly foam caulk savers that I found at Lowes. They have different sizes so I'm using larger ones for the wife and I.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Did you just spray the dreads black? I like how you mounted yours more vertically, rather than horizontally. I think it makes the foam dread hang more naturally.

Can you post a shot of what the dreads are attached to? Is it the ball cap?

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I glued the dreads directly to the foam on the inside of the mask then glued the hat in last so I knew that it would be placed correctly for my kids heads....

The dreads were plasti-dip'd. They don't give a lot of movement for the head when they have it on. Seems like no tree jumping for them. :D

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Got it. I don't plan on a wearing a mask under mine either. Too expensive, and not anything I could create on my own. Will have to remember the hat trick when doing final fitting for myself! Thanks for all the behind-the-scenes info!

Kids gotta be digging these things.
