Family of Predators - Foam build - *Completed*

Time to start running with a new thread with a build I'm actually working on.... Someone bought my Blue Beetle before I completed it.... :unsure

Funny how all the Iron Man builds have their own flavor or style even though it's the same thing. This would be why I'm posting, I might as well add to the Predator pile. I definitely have been borrowing ideas from this thread: http://www.therpf.com/f24/predator-costume-my-10yr-old-daughter-con-photos-164209/ and with the help of JFcustom starting with his mask: http://www.therpf.com/f24/foam-speed-building-files-video-added-148889/ and more....

I have made a few suits the past year and my family is looking at me asking why they haven't had one made for them. This concept actually started with my daughter. I saw a pink Predator and asked if she wanted to be one. She said purple and pink....works for me. Then at dinner she is bragging about the suit I will be making for her..... which my son says he wants one....then my wife said she wanted one to. Huh, a family of Predators eh? Why not....

I started through the motions of thinking this will be a quick build... 2D armor only worrying about the dreadlocks (the quantity, not building them) and then JFcustom sends a detailed image of the armor. Heh, oh look, texture.... One thing I've noticed is that hammered paint does not give the effect I like when you are looking at it from a distance. It's hard for the details to show up on camera too... in my opinion of course. There are a lot of ways to create texture, I'm going with what I'm good at, using a heat knife. - 5-In-1 Hobby Woodburner

CLIFFNOTES: Basketball court foam (out of stock), heat knife for texture, not doing latex suits - just regular suit of whatever color they chose, testing Epsilon for sealing (I have never sealed my foam before...ever), and I'm doing four of them...

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I am doing 2 at a time (see signature) ... and you HAD to one up me by doing 4 :)
(j/k)

Good stuff so far and cant wait to see it done. Subbed and watching the progress.

I am planning this for Dragon Con in '14 for me and the wife. Is yours for Halloween or a Con (or both)?

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

No timeline.... We go to a con in March as a family but it will be done wayyyyyy before then. I usually get side tracked if something new comes out, ex. Wolverine cowl. I actually keep building because I don't like idle hands. :D

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Emerald City CC in March? If so, I will see the Predator Fam there hopefully!

We are doing a family of Bounty Hunters (Bossk, Boussh, Jango & Zam) for that for 2 days and then I an doing Barf (in Spaceball Outfit) and Dark Helmet with a family friend for 1 day.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Nah... I don't get out much. Planet Comicon in Kansas City. Most of my costumes only see the kitchen cabinets in my basement.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I may have goofed trying to get done with the details on the current stuff I have assembled. More of a brain detail versus the test piece I did. Guess I'll see how it turns out when it's time to paint.

Can Wait To See THIs!

Thanks!

I am totally not impressed with this stuff. For how I build and what can actually been done with it I don't see the point. It may coat the armor so you don't have to be as gentle, and hide the seams but the heat will still effect the shape. I dont want to spend endless days on sanding when the suit will be worn a handful of times in its lifetime. Even after it "self levels" it isn't level. I'm gentle with my suits so I feel like plasti-dip is just as good for a replacement coating.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

its true about the "self levels" but i just hate the whole pva route... its also dependable on what type of foam is used, went more into testing after ive actually build my suit, found one type where just 1 really light sand was all it took.

in any case, looking forward to the bio's

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Looking great! Love the textures too. Looking forward to seeing your progress on this.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I will be watching this thread closely. Great work so far!

What are you planning to use for the skin suit?

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

I don't usually use my suits multiple times and they all go in trash bags when I store them. I am not going to do the latex alien under suit. Since I have 4 of them I am just letting them pick there color of under suit they want.

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

How about airbrushing the bodysuit?
No latex, but you will have the skin look?

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Eh... We'll see... I'm going insane just doing the kids texturing....

Re: Family of Predators - Foam build - *W.I.P.*

Your texturing is fantastic. It looks really organic. Are you just randomly touching your heat knife to it at different angles and at different locations?
