Facehugger Stasis Tubes.......how?????

Oh duh...I just realized my brother works at one of the major sign studios/shops. He can get acrylic producs wholesale. He got me an 8' x 4' sheet of styrene for vacforming purposes for $15. I'll run the numbers by him tomorrow, and see what he can come up with. Can't believe I didn't think of this sooner. As if the acrylic backed orange neon Cingular sign in my room wasn't a bright enough beacon.

24" Long, 10 and 15/16 OD wide with a 1/8-inch thickness, correct?

If you can persuade your brother to make this happen, you will be my new hero. :)

Yes, that's correct according to the Cerney article (quoted below). :thumbsup

The middle section is clear cast acrylic tube 24 inches long, 10 and 15/16 OD wide with 1/8-inch thickness. The shop cut the tube to the proper length and closed the clear tube on the bottom with a translucent white plastic. Joel at MGM made a top to the clear acrylic and suggested a stepped edge so the lid snapped would snap into place.

Seems to me it wouldn't be too tricky to cast your own tubes. It has to be one of the simplest possible shapes. Of course you'd need to be able to mix a very large batch of clear acrylic. It would still work out cheaper than the $500 mentioned earlier.

I'd be willing to "settle" for a less than perfect version. Some extruded acrylic tubing from someplace like "TAP Plastics" and a nice base and cap assembly, and it would not need to be watertight. I would be happy with a modestly priced ($200-300) version just to display. Certainly there is a need for the waterproof, high end versions but I suspect a number of us would like a lower priced, basic and dry display tube. Just my 2 cents.

Bad news: My brother's shop would have to special order it from the plastics manufacture and pay what we would have to pay. So no deals for us on that end. Sorry if I got anyones hopes up. I thought we could get a deal.

You could always go to a fast food joint and steal one of those large acrylic tubes with water that you throw quarters into to win a free pizza. They're about big enough. :lol

Thanks for trying! :thumbsup

Now what?

By the way, I'm in the high-end, watertight, "perfect" replica camp. :p

My brother just called me, and said he was doing some research through his supplier catalogs, and came across San Diego Plastics http://www.sdplastics.com

11" outside diameter with 1/8th" wall thickness is $58.64 a foot for cast acrylic and $59 for an 8 foot section of extruded.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Though, obviously we'll still need to add bottoms or have them add them, which will bump the price up a bit higher, but I can't see it going too much higher.

Maybe we could even get a group deal. Someone would need to call and ask.

Sounds interesting Tricloud.......That's a great price. Who'd be in for tubes like that? We could go for the top and bottoms in the next run:)

Zorg,

Excellent snoopinng my friend.

Tricloudwalker....that's a very useful bit of info on the light cover base. Anyone got a picture of the material type?

Here's the stuff I'm talking about, or at least, something close to it.

Also, this is Griefboy's photo. I'm not hotlinking you, but if you want it taken down, lemme know.

Great thread, i'd love to have one of these. That last tubes (tgreco) price seems good.

Wonder what postage to the Uk would be though.

Ah yes, I remember these things !

Frank, you're just showing off now !! I have always regretted selling mine to Allosaur...it was one of the few props my now-wife ever liked and considering making another one. Hmmmm.......
