Face Off Season 3

I was shocked...within a few minutes of the show, I already found my person to hate for the season, you guessed it...Joe. First thing through my mind was, "oh great, here is the 'Jerry' of the season, I get to see him episode after episode of his garbage"...but to my shock, he was gone before I could blink! The dude's superiority complex just annoyed the crap out of me. And the fact he did ask for help every few minutes, which in turn hurt the Columbus guy, just screamed problems. "Columbus"(sorry, don't recall his name already!), had every right to throw Joe under the bus, because he was nothing but a pain to work with and was dragging him down. If you ask my honest opinion, I think they were gonna eliminate "Columbus" because of his attempt to throw under the bus, they did so every time prior. Even though the issue was on Joe.

As for the winner, I did like both of the top looks. But, I think the girl one looked more "Starwarsy". It looked to fit in more with the OT cantina, as compared to the guys one, that did look like it would fit more in with the Clone Wars cartoon look. But, again, I did like both designs, they were pretty cool.

I think the girl one was WAY more fitting of Star Wars style and pretty much nailed it.

I did not at all picture the other guy (as well as they did in such a short time frame...very impressive) in the Star Wars universe.

I was personally shocked they chose the guy over the woman. Clearly more well thought out for the Star Wars universe.

Do the producers at Sci-Fi know the folks watching this program have zero interest in "reality show" drama?? I hope they cut down on the silliness this season. It gets in the way of the creativity.

Agreed. The ladies' creation seemed a perfect fit for the Star Wars Cantina and Clone Wars look. I really liked the fellas work too. That little guy in the exoskeleton was very cool. They thought outside the box on that one.

Just watched this with my kids, 6 and 9.

They both hated Joe off the bat, and clapped when he walked :)

I wonder if he'll turn out to have been a plant or something, and make a surprise reappearance later in the run?

Hearing the words "undercut" and "mother mold" on TV was a bit surreal, and very cool. The gals with one of the two top designs nailed it, IMO. The look was right on, not to mention the most cohesive concept.

The pinhead (literal) who bailed had no business there in the first place.

I also think the ladies should have won that challenge. More weight should have been given to how the character fits into Star Wars. That amphibian bounty hunter could very well be cgi'd into the next versio of ANH! I loved the work done by 2 obvious fans.

That said Joe had to go. The drama was NOT needed at all.

I agree that the girls should have won. Their costume was much more in the vein of star wars. The guys exoskeleton was awesome in that they were very ambitious with the project.

I'm really liking that Rod guy though. He went out of his way to help the girls get their waitress done. Even though it's a competition, he seems like the kind of guy who would rather help others so that they're makeup can be judged completed instead of being eliminated because they couldn't finish on time. And the fact that he didn't comment on his own work and rather praised his teammate for his hard work. Definitely my favorite so far.

I likes the waitress design and I'm glad they pulled off the mold of the head piece but the costume was terrible. It did not fit at all in the star wars universe.

I liked the the final two picks, one was very ambitious, but felt out of place for the theme. The other could have stepped out of an "Art of" book as an unused design. That happened to be my only problem with it. I looked like something I'd seen before.

+1 in the "Joe was an *****" column.

Anyone else think that Roy, the guy in the cowboy hat, looks like he could be Jean Reno's brother?

I have to root for Laura since she is semi-local.

edit: WTF? I'm watching a recording to see something I missed last night and on the first competition Joe whips out the, "You just don't understand it" defense.

It's really interesting to watch these competitions. I find it interesting that practical FX artists run into the exact same kinds of issues that us digital artists do - with artwork as well as creative conflicts.

For the final pieces, I think that the female should have won the competitionas well. It's true that the guys did an amazing job in the time they had, and obviously worked famously together, but I don't feel like the final product worked for the Star Wars Universe as well as the ladies character did. I also loved how clean the lines were and how polished the final product was. These were things that I thought were lacking in the guys final piece. By the way,you can see their work converted into the Clone Wars version at: StarWars.com | Home

But the tools us digital artists have in our favor is the CTRL + Z and revision history! In sculpting, it's really an all or nothing sort of situation. And even if you get the sculpt spot on, a bad mold pull and you're screwed! So my hats really off to these artists who are, in every sense of the word, working without a net. But clean lines and definition are keys to making good creature design regardless of the media of your choice.

One thing I loved about both teams is how well they worked together, placing trust in that the others knew what they were doing, a stark contrast to the other team (Joe and Tommy) where Joe bailed before eliminations.

The team that failed was a perfect example of how not to be a part of a creative team. Collaboration requires a lot of give and take, and a lot of trust. The most important aspect in these types of situations is to keep the environment healthy and productive. When either of these aspects go sour, you can expect that tempers will flair, productivity will falter, and creativity will tank. And this happened in HD last night to that team. It's unfortunate that this happened to both of these contestants in such a spectacularly public manner. I think it's important to remember that these contestants are under emmense amount of pressure and people don't always react well to pressure. Talent opinions aside, I really believe that Joe was just reacting to feeling the pressure, and unfortunately exacerbated the situation by not putting his feelings in check. Despite trying to find a balanced opinion there, I'm actually glad he's gone if that was going to be how he deals with stress.

Oh and one more observation, Joe probably burned most of his bridges in the industry with the way he acted not to mention his **** poor work.

Oooooooh weeeeeellll :D

It looks like he has some decent stuff here and there. Too bad his ego, attitude, and will to take criticism and walking out lowered his rep and will probably cost him a lot of work relationships in the future:

joe castro (Joe Castro) on Myspace

MySpace???? Who the **** still uses MySpace? If he was interviewing for a job with me and gave a link to his MySpace page as a portfolio, I wouldn't hire him on that alone :lol

Here's his Facebook page. The public posts have him pretty much bashing SyFy and anything and anybody associated with the show.

SPOILERISH: While he does not reveal the actual name, he does say the gender of season three's winner. That is, if he really knows.

Well, that kinda blows my "he was just under a lot of pressure" theory... < shrugs>

I was checking out the guys Facebook profile and he's just plain stupid. Everything he posted made him sound more and more ignorant and stupid. Also surprise surprise, joe and jerry from season 2 are best friends. I can see syfy going after him for revealing the gender. I'd say he's toast in the industry. Especially if the judges have anything to do with it.

As I said before, make up effects is notorious for attracting god complex people. That Joe guy is more the standard fare than you may realize in the industry. Much of it is born and breed from a mentor same way alcoholism is "inhered" from parents. If your brought up around it, you stand a great chance of becoming it.
Many times is easy to spot MUFX people that started off as prop makers. There is a completely different approach to a project and its outcome with a back up plan on top of a back up plan while thinking outside the box.

On a side note, isnt it sort of wrong to have people with an extensive background as contestants? These should be people starting out, young and hungry not people with lots of experience that have been working in the industry.

That sets show was posting on craiglist some months back seeking art dept people for the show. Not to put it down but at the time I was told it was more like Monster House than a set building show. Lets see where that one lands but my expectations are low.
