Evolution of the Y-Wing

Cool pic over at StarWars.com shows a concept drawing of a Y-Wing as it will appear in the Clone Wars animated series. It keeps with the concept that the Y-Wings we saw in the original trilogy were fighters stripped of their exterior body panels for ease of repair for the rebel engineers. Now we get to see what one looks like fresh from the shipyards. I always loved the Y's.

I read somewhere before that the Y-wing had armor and it was stripped bare for other ships to use the armor..that is why it looked so bare..somewhere there is a pic of the armored y-wing..very similar to the one shown

That is really cool. It would be even cooler if they came out with a model that can have the armor removable and you can display it with or without it. It would make for a great diorama too. You could have it in a hangar bay with several individual panels removed and engineers working in those areas.

Now that is a damn good idea! I would gladly buy one if one were made. We can only hope one day LFL and Hasbro will think of something so creative.

I was under the impression that both the Y-wing and X-wing fighters were pretty archaic by the time Ep. 4 came out. Now they've gone and rewritten continuity, yet again. Thanks George! :angry

Well, no. It was canon that they were an older starfighter model but to say they were archaic isn't accurate. If the Clone Wars occur say 18 years prior to ANH, how does this not jibe for you? :wacko

Me being a Y wing enthusiast, I would have to say I dont like it. :angry

I prefer this concept that was shown in the cross sections book:

I completely agree here...The newer concept would appear to have an awful lot of wasted room underneath the armour if the basic structure of the craft is taken into account. Why would there be all that extra bulk? What's it for? Are they luggage compartments? :lol The engine vanes look silly on this concept covered in armour and look well out of place attached to the body of the craft. They should stick to the cross section version instead of meddling any further. You can instantly recognize it as a new pristine factory fresh Y-wing, whereas with the newer one, I had to do a double take as I couldn't see it as being a Y-wing straight away and thought it was a newer craft altogether.

I always disliked the crossection book version of the Y-wing panels. The design was lazy and didn't take into account what the lines of the Y-wing cockpit were implying- Yes, you can recognize it instantly as a Y-wing, but the panels don't look like they have any purpose or style.

Of all the original trilogy designs, the Y is the best example of the 'panels removed for effeciencty' idea. The X-wing doesn't have a lot of exposed grebblies, and the Falcon at most has a few panels missing. The Y has always implied that it has the most exposed 'guts', much the same way as the Episode 1 C-3PO. I don't you can extrapolate the shape of the 'skin' simply by looing at the shape of the 'guts'.

This new CW design at least makes sense given what we see of the original 'skin'. Plus, I actually like the idea that it's somewhat unrecognizable at first glance.

The new design is a little clunky- I always envisioned a 'bit' more curves to the body panels. I actually attempted my own version many years ago:

Is it just me, or does it appear that the Star Wars universe technology went backwards through the prequels to the OT? To me, the OT Y-Wing (and other ships) look older than the designs we saw in the prequels.

I like it, it has a nice connection to the later ship while looking like it was from a more prosperous time.:thumbsup

I always thought the A-Wing looked like/was a Y-Wing without the middle 'neck', thats where I would have started my concept version from ........?.

While I like your idea of the "complete" Y-Wing over the newest one,...the cross-Section one still makes sense from the standpoint of interior space.
The new design shows a LOT of interior space. For WHAT?
If it was empty space, why have those panels there?
If something was in there,..equipment, fuel, etc.,...What are we now missing from the Y-Wing? Is the performance now altered?

Your interpretation is very nice indeed, (I like the reverse curve to the front fuse), but it implies that it had a vertical stab that was unnecessary. How did that get past the designers?
Not complaining, mind you. It is a very nice rendition.
Thanks for posting pics.

I did think about that when coming up with my design. However, I wouldn't let that kind of rational stand in the way (Star Wars is about visuals first after all)!

And I don't know that I would call it a 'LOT' of interior space. The only place where there is a lot of wasted space is on either side of the neck area. I figured there could be some sort of equipment that was deemed 'unnessesary'. Perhaps this was space for mission-specific equipment; supplies, other gear for recon missions that wasn't needed for short bombing runs. One of the back-story ideas of the Y is that is was used for long missions...

Or perhaps just luggage space? (The X-wing has it!)
