It's based on the rebuild. However it's very similar to the classic NGE Eva-01.

Nice. Wish they made Evangelion instead of Pacific Rim. Eva units are way better.

I think you can apply that to just about anything though...

- remake The Godfather and Star Wars (rebooting classics that shouldn't be touched)
- make a movie based on Gilligan's Island (nostalgic TV to big screen)
- make a movie about Tinker Toys and Lincoln Logs (toys themed movie)
