Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Hows she coming along Nick, this is front page stuff & any updates would be ace? Hope you head down in it mate as this deserves to be out there being built & painted. I'm planning a bloody long holiday soon & It wont be the same without a few speeders to build. Anything you need just ask, as this is too good to not be out there soon. She is a beauty.

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Hi Guy,

I've just spent hours pouring a massive about of RTV into the top hull V2 mould. Got to then do the back edge area of each hull section then finish off a couple small moulds including the pilots. That will conclude the moulding phase which has been an incredibly long slog. I can't wait to concentrate on casting and doing a first build up etc.

Hang on in there....

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Dude it's looking real sweet what you've shown us already.
I know i'm looking forward to one of these awesome beasties.Your work is just outstanding and like the rest can't wait to see your kit.It sure sounds like they are getting real close now.Keep up that great work !

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Thanks for the vibes of eager anticipation. Just to say that I'm waiting on what I hope will be my last tub of RTV. It came while I was out y'day and as its a Bank Hol here I'm going to have to wait till Tue eve before I can pick it up.

I'm all set then to pour the reverse sections of both hulls to create the trailing edges. If all goes ok I hope to have a pair of hulls cast by or over next weekend which will be a big milestone....fingers crossed.

Cheers
Nick

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Hi,

For those following this thread this is just a quick note to apologise for the quiet patch lately. I got messed about by my resin and RTV supplier which meant I missed out on a few days where I had planned to get on with the main hulls. Lately I've had hardly any chance to work on things.

I am on the case again now though, and have a top hull cast up. What I've decided to do is re work the mould that forms the top trailing edge of the top hull. Basically Luke's speeder has flat areas, whilst Wedge and the other 'Red' marked speeders have a set of ridges that extend out. I want to be able to swap these reverse moulds so that I can cast up whichever version folk want rather than have to have folks apply these ridges as part of the build up.

So....bear with me and I will get some pics up again soon.

Cheers
Nick

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Take as long as you need! It's a crazy amount of work!

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Thanks Jason, and you would know better than most! :).
Actually you are right, its proved to be an insane amount of work and I'm damn near exhausted doing it ontop of my normal job. Its so tempting to just start bashing stuff out, but I'm making myself take a step back and try to get it all as good as I can.

I'm so looking forward to building up and painting one of these to show you guys!

I will toss my hat in with the others, Nick. Take as much time as you need. I am behind you all the way on this kit.

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Indeed Nick.... there is no rush for such fine art my friend. :D You are doing what nobody else has done. This is worth the wait. :D I am very thankful to you for doing it! And so well at that! :D

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

Thanks for the update,Nick.
Mate i agree with the others and say there no rush there.
I know i'm blown away by what you've shown already and i have no doubt the hull's will turn out just fine like the rest of it.

The only thing i've gotta decide now is which version i wanna build.

Thanks again mate

Re: Echo Station 57, we're on our way....slowly

An update from Echo Base....

Here are some pics showing the development work I've been doing on the main hull sections. They are made from epoxy and reinforced with an epoxy paste impregnated with carbon fibres. The beauty of the paste is that you can apply it very easily and sculpt it to form support bulkheads. Though its very strong its also very easy to dremel away should anyone want to; eg lighting, or cutting away hull panels for superdetailing etc. I've still got a bit more tinkering before they all mate up properly but I'm getting there.

I did a test to see how I can create the ridges on the trailing edges of the top hull and one pics shows this. For some reason the epoxy on this cast was still soft so the part got deformed, but it served it purpose.

I've done some pilot castings which have turned out well. Also I've taped up an airbrake box to the top hull to show how that all looks. NB For the sharp eyed out there you'll notice the front grill on this particular hull cast has blow outs, however other casts have come out perfectly. I'd just skimmed the epoxy over it on this one, infact I need to squish the stuff into the surface with my finger and it comes out fine.

There is a pic showing the airflap rig that I intend to offer. It simply involves some magnets and magnetic strip which enables the airflap to be held in an open position for those who may want to alternate between a deployed/closed display stance. The plan is to have the same system for the lower brakes.

I should just say that as of tomorrow, 8th June I'm starting a pretty heavyweight new job so my head is going to be groaning with all the new stuff I have to deal with. I'll keep plugging away at the Speeder but I'm not sure at the moment how much of an impact the new job will have on my evenings etc.

Anyway, hope you like the pics, I'll hopefully get a proper set of castings done soon in order to do a full build up.

Cheers
Nick
