Anyone able to tell me how easy/hard dyeing a tan felt-like material purple would be? Would the color change work or no? Is this a vague enough question?

(sorry - just realized this would fit better in costuming)

If it's real leather, there are tons of leather dyes out there. If you're in a crunch, go get a set of cheap crayola markers and use the purple dye in one of the markers diluted with water.

well, its not leather - its like a thick felt material... I just didnt know if dyeing it purple would make it end up some weird color... like tan + purple = ????

I would wager if you dyed it in 2 stages, it would hit the purple you want. Dye it red first, then blue. You can always go darker, not lighter when it comes to dying things.

I dyed the leather on my Doom holster to match the belt.

Good luck with your Joker overcoat. :p

(I wouldn't mind knowing more about this as well.)

Red + Blue don't always make Purple. It can make a nasty Gray if you're not careful. Most Red pigments WILL NOT MAKE A RICH PURPLE when mixed with blue. A perfect example is food coloring. it makes more of a Gray Icing, not purple. What is the fabric? The care instructions can help determine that. If it's a Polyester there's not much that will dye it. You'll have to paint it. It's Tan, so you have to account for that. If you're not that concerned with the result, go get RIT dye at the grocery or drug store, the directions are on it. Get Purple, NOT Red and Blue. A magic marker won't get you the concentration you need. There are tons of hand dying resources on the internet.
Here's some dye companies:

He he - yeah, I knew as soon as the word "purple" showed up, it would be pretty obvious...

Thanks everyone for the tips - I guess since its a $15 coat at savers, I'll go ahead and RIT Dye it - if it doesnt come out.. oh well...

hmmm - the purple dye seemed to change it from tan to a darker brown... any suggestions? Dye again? Is there a fabric paint that wont make it go all stiff?

Maybe you should find a way to "bleach" it first, then the purple should do its work...:confused

"It's Tan, so you have to account for that."
Dye is weird. It reacts very differently with other dyes and colors and fabrics. The wrong dye and the wrong fabric and you have a mess. Those links I posted give good info on that. Be careful with the bleach. It may not touch the color and give you something worse. It could give you a green or orange that you could never dye purple. There are plenty of places to cut a swatch from on the coat and TEST first. Under the collar, in a pocket, etc. Any spray paint or paint you use is gonna be stiff. That much "Fabric Paint" is gonna cost an arm and a leg. It's not a white fabric. You'll either have to paint it light and then purple, or soak it down with the purple. If you do that, do it way ahead of time, because there's a chance it'll never cure on it. Either way it's gonna be stiff. Textile Airbrush Paints may not even stick to it if it's not cotton, they are way cheaper and less stiff, but again it's not white.
With no idea about what the fabric is I really can't help you. We gotta know what this "felt-like" material is. Don't know if it was Khaki or a Caramel, or Butterscotch color. If it's wool or whatever. What do the care instructions say if there's a tag in it? Who's the Maker? Post a picture. It's blind conjecture on what would be best.
