Dredd 2012 (ish) helmet - my first pep project

Just a few in-progress pics of my first pepakura project. It's not fully movie-accurate (e.g. it's missing the raised area in the center going to to the back), but I learned a lot of new techniques and more importantly, I had a ton of fun doing it. And that's kinda the point, isn't it.

After much orange peel in both paint and clearcoat, and much wetsanding, it was finally at a point where I could get the visor mounted.

It still needs a foam liner and of course a respirator badge, but I am pretty happy with the progress. I have learned way too much about orange peel and wet sanding, but I am sure those things will come in handy at some point. I'll post some more pics once the glue on the visor fully cures and the foam liner is installed.

Looking great! I am about to start on my first helmet build, I'm going to try using an existing skateboarder style helmet for the top and then add the pep to the lower half and for the raised part that goes on the top. I haven't been able to find this pep file everyone seems to have but isn't linked anywhere. Do you have a link to where I could download it?

Thanks for the link - I thought I had seen all the helmet threads but I must have missed a few. Thanks for additional info as well. Planning to figure out if existing helmet + pep will work or if I should go all pep this week, and then start this weekend. Are you doing a full uniform costume as well? I am and need to start posting pics soon. Keep up the good work on the helmet.

Personally, I'd go all pep. This is my first pep project, and the actual cardboard assembly only took about two hours. Trying to line one round shape up with another round shape may get tricky. But you could always build smaller sub-assemblies (i.e. the lower half of the helmet) and see how they match up with your existing helmet.

Eventually, I'll be doing a full uniform, but since most of my cosplay happens at steampunk events, I am planning on making a leather and brass version of the armor and accessories first.

Some more pics.

In a stroke of irony, I discovered actual damage in area of the last photo when I was trying to some weathering. Apparently water managed to saturate a layer in the cardstock that hadn't been fully soaked by resin, and it flaked right off, paint and all. This left a hole, which had to be patched and then repainted. Thankfully my miniature paints worked wonderfully, and one of the reds matched almost perfectly.

great job, good looking lid.

I did a Dredd helm as my first ever pep. Had a great time doing it.
