Dreads... Something A Little Different

I agree that this is a very innovative idea, my initial concern was in regards to the weight. Just a quick semi off topic question. Where are you buying your plasti dip in alberta (I live in Edmonton) and I can't find it anywhere.
I bought all my plasti dip from Auto Value Parts store here in Calgary they carry it in the spray and dip form.

I knew I had seen a sign on 16th out front of an auto store but I couldn't remember the exact name. I'll have to check it out sometime. Hopefully they start carrying it at Auto Value in E-Town too.

This is what I love to see here on the Lair-- try Ideas that have never been done-- Awesome job!!! Cant wait to see them on a headpiece.
Thanks a lot big guy!

Try them on a mask, youre killing me
I'm trying, I'm trying!!! If I had a mask I would, but I have to wait until mine is finished. Doing the fiberglass mother mold tomorrow after work and then I'll touch up the sculpt and start the Ultra Cal mold ASAP. Just not enough hours in the day sometimes.

Pretty cool! Have you given any thought to dread rings?

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll just cut down some PVC and dremel out some P1 style designs for the time being. Quick and gritty.

I got a chance to measure the diameter of the snakes today and they're about 3/4 of an inch at their widest point. I wish they were a bit wider but hey, beggars can't be choosers. I don't really see dread rings having too much of a negative effect as long as they are placed where there is no necessary crucial movement. That's one of the next things on the to do list. I'll let you all know how it works out.

Your sculpt is great too :)

Thank you very much.

Do it, do it NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! Get the Mother moulded, the suspense is killing me.............

Haha, Mother mold is done and drying. If all goes well I will crack it open tomorrow night and see where things stand. I don't know why you're being so impatient... it's only taken a year to get to this point. o_O :p Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Oh that's a really awesome idea! Now my thought is would they still be flexible if you dipped them in Plasti-Dip? To lessen the clanking?

I should go to my dollar store now to try :)

The Michaels craft store near me has these for a buck each. They also have alligators, but I don't think that those would work.

I'd love to see a cyber-punk Predator with snake dreads. Maybe with the Dark Blade armor from Concrete Jungle?

(although a google image search for cyberpunk reminded me to 'be careful for what I wish for.')

I sort of started on a cyber goth predator but never finished it, ended up just doing a more traditional suit. However I could always change it up sometime :)

Thanks Guys

Let me know if you do. My worry was that the Plasti-Dip would fill in all of the areas between the wood segments and sort of seal them all together- Thus restricting the movement. So far it hasn't but I haven't dipped them or done more than 2 or 3 coats of paint or Plasti-Dip. I think it would limit the clanking for sure but I'm not sure how the movement would be affected.

I just checked my Michaels as well and they had a pretty good variety. I think they were all shorter than the one I picked up but the ones I have are super long so thats not necessarily a bad thing. They also had some super short ones which were skinnier as well. I'm going to pick up a few of those as well one nihgt soon to use for the smaller dread holes. Thanks a lot man. I was pretty stumped on what to do for those.

I agree though, the alligators and scorpions I saw may look a bit odd hanging from my mask. But I think the snakes could be used for some pretty interesting looks. I still plan to make proper dreads, these were just meant as a temporary quick fix more than anything. But I'm excited to see how they work out.

Always busting my balls. It's a good thing though, god knows someone needs to do it.

So I'm not super stoked on this update. I still like the snake Idea and think it definitely has potential but it needs some serious tweaking before it's a valid option.

I did a really quick cleaning pull from my UltraCal mold, and that's all I've used for testing so far but I did learn a few important things:

1) The snakes are very loud. They clank together a lot and it got pretty annoying pretty fast.
2) The snakes were incredibly heavy.

Can't say that either of those come as a huge shocker

I haven't trimmed them to size yet but I stuck them in the thin pull quickly to see how they looked. The mask is only 1 layer and not foam filled, so It really wasn't able to hold its shape in the slightest- so it was no match for the weight of the snakes and just sort of flopped down on itself. I still think with some rigid foam filling in the crown, and only using the snakes in the outer row of dreads, using backer rod underneath and cutting the snakes way shorter could help both of those problems but it will take some more testing and ingenuity to pull it off.
I need to pull together a basic costume my Friday, so I might have to resort to the good ol' (It pains me to say that) Backer Rod method until I have more time to experiment.

I'd love to see/hear if anyone else has tried this out at all and what they've found. I haven't given up hope on it by any means, it's just going to have to take some tweaking before it becomes a viable option.

Raw Cleaning pull. Lots of airbubbles and imperfections and very thin.

I have a few t-shirts balled up in the mask to try and hold the shape a bit, but you can see that the weight of the snakes is deforming the shape of the head and pulling out the latex in the dread holes- turning them from innies to outies. You can also see the sparseness of the dreads, which shows the need for a row or two of backer rods or something underneath them. I still love the look and think they have some potential but at this stage they weren't cooperating very well and were quite uncomfortable.

I'll keep playing once I have a few better pulls of the mask but feel free to share thoughts and suggestions.

Maybe shortening the dreads alittle would help, i really like this idea , its something new, and looks good plus cheap, next up a mobility video of the dreads :)

Yeah I definitely think that will make a difference. I'll try to get a mobility video up but it probably won't be until I've had time to play after Halloween.

I was concerned that you'd run into this problem. Those things looked awfully heavy. :(
Yeah... I went in with wishful thinking and it sort of bit me in the ass. There's still hope for them though and trying new things is what this place is all about. Some work, some don't. It's the name of the game :)

Backer rod has virtually no movement, and unless you spend the money for the hard to find 1" backer rod, they're too thin.  They just don't look good or move right IMO.
