DR WHO eye drive, leather covered piece p2

Absoloutely...if you can work in urethane (fastcast) resin, then urethane rubber's no different really.....it doesn't kick as quickly but is MUCH nicer as a final product than latex.....plus you can alter the finish you'll get by prepping the master and using a silicone mould.

So cool to see others making these too.

A Dr Who friend of mine asked me if I could make one for him, and I thought 'sure'. I made a quick sculpt and poured up a plaster mould.....then pulled it in tinted latex.

He put it on his livejournal and suddenyl I've been bombarded with requests - and as the mould won;t hold up to more than three or four pulls, I;ve just sculpted up a 'Dr' version and a 'Generic' version (Flatter and smoother - like the Eyepatch lady wears).

I'm pouring up the silicone mould now and will be running them in urethane.

What did you use to made it adhere to your face?

i'll see about getting some of feabay, be good for a couple of smaller projects i've got coming up, what about painting, is it a precolour job?

A FB friend of mine and friend of Niell Gorton suggested the best way to keep them on is To stick it on with is Duo -its a latex based glue for artificial lashes, we use it for all kinds of things that we need to stick on to people.... Its made by Kryolan and also sold in lots of Chemist shops that also sell lashes.
Another friend reccomended Toupe Tape

Alright kiddies, I think this is the one! I wrapped leather over the vacuform and it gave it just the right look (In my humble opinion). Here it is one my wife, we used band-aids curled to hold it on, but it lifted a few times, I imagine if we used some pros-aid or this duo stuff, we can hold it more flush.

With just vacuform plastic:

now with leather wrap:

So if someone is interested let me know and I'll make some for Halloween costumes!

@wondersquid: the leather wrap Eye Drive is brilliant! I'm a long-time-lurker, but having stumbled across this thread and your Eye Drive I've registered :)

Definitely would like 2 of these (1 for me and 1 for my partner); maybe even a third if a mate of mine is interested. Would have come in handy last weekend when I met Frances Barber/Mdme. Kovarian.

Lookin' good 'Squid, now you've got to try your hand at 'pewter-fying' it, yeah?

I'm already in for one of Frosty's awesome versions, and now I want to get one of yours to go with it.

I think I may have a problem worthy of attending meetings. :lol

Just started a For Sale thread in the junkyard, check there for prices or PM me for details. I'll see if I can make that pewter one up and gets pics soon.

Well good luck with your sales, i'll still offer mine, sure others will offer them also.

Re: DR WHO eye drive

Why make it out of resin? Weren't the real ones leather? I've been thinking of sculpting a form and making myself one out of leather.

As I said before up thread Robert Allsopp and co made the ones you see in the show and they were sculpted, cast and then vac formed and then finally covered in ultra thin pewter coloured leather. There was one size for the women and one size for all the men.

They were held on with toupee tape and would you believe he still has a drawer full of the rejected copies as we speak

Robert's company was also responsible for making the Creepy dollies and The Handbots too amongst other things. He's currently working on this years Christmas special.

Yep. I noticed today that the eye drive actually curves away from the eye, following the bridge of the nose. This lends itself to the illusion of an extreme hook, when it's just a trick of perception.

Because of these damn things, I may end up getting some alginate or something to dunk my head into. My wife isn't going to be thrilled. :lol

I just wanted to add here that one could use a chisel or similar leatherworking tool to "skive", or shave thin, a piece of leather so that it could be applied to the form.

I've already got a plaster cast of my face to work with, but what would be a good readily available material to sculpt the patch with on top of it? I've heard people talk about milliput and stuff, but as far as I know there aren't any Hobby Lobby's around here and I'd rather not order anything online if I can help it. Is there any good air dry clay or similar stuff that I could use?

I imagine it was kid leather. The kind used to line masks etc. I'll ask him If he had to rework any of it to fit the formers before hand.

Hey RISU, I used Super Sculpy, it's a ceramic type compound that doesn't air dry and can be heated and baked to harden and stay in shape. I don't know if they have a Micheals overseas, but that's where I got mine. It's great stuff, I wish I had a head cast, I just formed the stuff to my face, then carefully pulled it off and used a heat gun to harden it enough to sand and shape a little more.

I got the two new sculpts finished up, and moulded in silicone and am now casting them up in tinted urethane rubber.
