well, here is my internal struggle,
i can only afford to get 1 of these :angry

A Don Post Deluxe Fiberglass Darth Vader helmet
    -mint condition
-# around 800 of 1000, or (#189 currently selling by a member here)

    A 1978 Darth Vader 12 Back figure
-AFA rated around 80 or more

now which one would you guys get?
they are approx in the same price range right now
i'm leaning towards the 12 back figure.

anyone want to share some info? tips?
to help me make my decision? :D

Go for it. I am still very happy with mine.

yeah i've thought of that too, how do you keep yours?
i was thinking of putting it in a small safe, and lock it up, put some wrappings on the star case that will trap out moisture.

12- Back.....even though I sold mine last year, they are very cool. Buy some display cases for protection and keep them out of the direct sunlight. Mine was even unpunched.

I'd say buy the 12 back figure. (so that leaves the helmet free for me to buy it . muahahahahaha. :lol )

12 back...I don't yet have one myself...would love to get the perfect one...there are much better helmets out there than the DP Deluxe.

So, what's the draw to getting the figure? Is it the nostalgia or rarity? Or is it because there are nicer Vader helmets out there?

12-back Vaders pop up on a regular basis, as do DP Deluce helmets.

I´d say go get the 12-back, if you compare the price development over the past 10 years, the 12-back beats the DP helmet by miles.

    Go for the 12 back.

Nothing beats a vintage carded figure,as i would think thats where most of us started in 1977 :)

Definitely the 12-back. Vintage Star Wars is the bset, and it doesn't get much more vintage than that.

Looks like the votes are unanimous. You might as well go for the figure. When you DO have more money, you can go for something nicer than a DP.

I wouldn't have expected such a huge number of 12-backs here. Personally, I'd go for the helmet. The 12-back is cool and perhaps a better investment. But the helmet won't likely lose any value and it would mean more to me than the figure. IMO.

But with the helmet you have to deal with tthe scratches, the chipped paint...

Go with the helmet. If you want to play with the figure you destroy its value by opening it. If you want to scare someone in the middle of the night, then the Vader helmet can supply that joy and it doesnt get destroyed.

Personally, I wouldn't even consider the 12 back, but then I'm not an action figure collector.

It amazes me how the cost of these carded figures is so high now - if I did own it, I'd be afraid to display it at all. Funny, I remember ripping open a few of those as a kid. :p

The 12 back will be the better investment, probably - but the DP Vader helmet would give me more pleasure as a display piece so that's what I'd go for.

I say the low numbered helmet.

It's funny how page 1 is all for the figure, and page 2 is all helmets so far. Well, not funny, but...ah well you get it. Sorry, I'm dead tired.

I too would have to go for the helmet, but not for display. Being a member of the 501st, I'm all about going out in costume. Get the helmet.

The one expection might be if you have all of the other carded figs from that era and are only missing that one.

    Good luck with your decision.

Its so much closer to the real thing in the movie.
You dont see action figures appearing in any of the SW movies now do you? ;)

Go for the helmet , at least you can wear it.

The figure is nice but it's just going to hang on the wall or whatever.

And later you will think to yourself "Why didn't I get the helmet?"

I know I picked action figures over Icons a few years back, still kicking myself over the deal :unsure

OOOhhhhh, Helmet gets the nod from me too.

It's more durable to the environment than a carded figure, it doesn't have to be in a climate controlled room, where sunlight doesn't penetrate.

If for some reason the helmet gets a little moisture it will easily wipe off, people can touch it without fear of creasing or denting it (you know how people like to look with their hands).
Also, to be honest, I think it's far more impressive, better bang for your buck so to speak.

    Just my opinion.

    :lol ....page 1...12-back, page 2....helmet

I regret not getting a 12 back Vader when they were cheaper...
There are very few 12 backs in mint or NM condition. Yes low numbered DP Deluxes are few and far between now, but there will be other Vader helmets I'm sure coming down the pike either licensed or fan-made and most of them will have something over the DP Deluxe in quality. The 12 back is from a classic period that will never come again...the DP Deluxe is from a more recent period and so it's value over the long term will not hold or appreciate as much as the 12 back...MHO.

I'd go for the helmet. The 12 back will probably just get locked away somewhere for safe keeping. What's the fun in that?
