DONE! Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Awesome, I can't wait to see more.

Are you planning on lighting her?

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

I would love to light her, but the guys having me build this one only wants to test to see if the parts fit well, and to make sure that all the parts are workable. When I get mine, I plan to light the hell out of it. :)

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

HUGE update.

Sam from Bigger Box Models came over today to help me start building this ship. After all, it is his baby.

Anyhow, we were trying to figure out a good dry dock to build this in that will not only keep it upright, but protect it at the same time. We went to Home Depot and came up with this:

Yeah, it's taped together for now, but tomorrow I will drill holes in it to connect the two parts together with bolts. We're figuring with all the parts to do this, it will be around twelve dollars at Home Depot.

I ended up using my dremel and my rotozip to make room for my wrench to get in to tighten the nuts on the shoulders (odd sentence). My suggestion to you is to remove that whole inner part. Here's a pic that I took after I went at the part with my dremel:

Shoulders on (pic took before I went at this part with power tools. Therefore the shoulders came off to hollow the section out):

Test fit the hull:

First part of the saucer section on:

Second part:

Saucer attached to the hull:

The back detail part goes on:

Now the lower parts. I'm sorry that I didn't take more pics of this process. We just started lining stuff up and before we knew it we were done.

Then we thought it would be cool to dry fit the lower and upper parts of the ship:

Ha ha, I think it was a good idea!

Next come the nacelles. Front detail on:

Then, I know we've seen the Coke Can for judging size. Well, here's the Corona Bottle to test size. LOL

Anyhow, this thing is 32.5 inches from front to back.

That's all until tomorrow!

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Coming from you, that is a huge compliment! Thank you!

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Sent you a PM. I gotta have one of these. Thanks! That Dauntless looks pretty big too!

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Thanks again guys.

This build is for the website and it will not be painted, just primered. It is mainly to see if all the parts go together well and it will be a nice addition to the website to have the actual model that you will be getting up there. Hopefully the next one get's painted and lit.

Three parts, from what I understand, will be cast in clear resin for all your lighting needs. I believe that they will be the top of the Saucer section, and the two domes on the top and the bottom of the Saucer section.
The rotocast parts as well as the two part Hull will also help with all your lighting and wiring needs.

On to what we did yesterday... Well, not as much as we would have liked. Finished the Nacelles, but didn’t get them mounted. We want to mount the top of the ship to the bottom of the ship first.

We also dry fit the whole ship, but I'm still waiting for that picture to come my way.

Can somebody verify this calculation for me? Grissom model length: 32.5 inches. Grissom actual (if it was real) size: 4724.41 inches (120 Meters). Model scale would then be 1/145. Is that correct?

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

So we ran into a problem with the build that is being taken care of as we speak. One of the parts did not line up as it was supposed to, so now that master and the mold is being reworked for that part. Thank God for test builds. :)

Any-hoo-ha. Yesterday we dry fit everything.

Looking great.

I have learned to appreciate this ship more over the years,
A bit of an ugly duckling that grew on me.

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Thanks guys. This ship has grown on my as well.

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

I've alwas had a soft spot of the Grissom.I can't find the web site.Do you know what this kit will be retailing for by chance?I'm "interested" in this kit,it looks like minimal cleanup and assembly is needed.

Re: Test build (a slow one): Star Trek U.S.S. Grissom

Okay, back to this build.

We had to rework the "shoulder mold" do to the parts not lining up. It's all fixed now but that put this build behind. A decision has also been made not to make any clear parts for these.

So I put the reworked shoulder on and the "scallop" piece.

IMGP1389.jpg

Now it's time to fill the seams.

IMGP1391.jpg

That's all I did last night. I will do a little more tonight.
Oh, this thing is also causing some delay to this build. But, I think that it will be worth it in the end. :D

Mind the mess in the background. It's been crazy around here lately with bee kits going out and making parts for three different kits.

Who needs something rotocast? LOL
