Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

How come you didn't like your last mark III? it looked fine in one of your videos on youtube!

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Done yet? :lol
Great start. Can't wait to see how this turns out. :thumbsup
Thanks Dude, maybe I'll actually finish it this time.:lol

Oh that was War Machine. I didin't like the a lot of the parts and the resin I used wasn't the greatest in relation to the cardstock and fiberglass mat. It wasn't strong enough for me to be happy with it. It was very tedious to coat each part on the inside.

The amount of resin to coat the inside of WM parts = $$$ just to equal somewhere close to the strength of Fiberglass resin+mat.

Wasn't worth it to keep strengthening the inside of the parts.

I use Epoxy Resin and it works sorta like fiberglass resin in regards to absorbing into the cardstock and fiberglass mat a hell of a lot better than urethane resin does.

thats awsome
Thank you :)

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

no actually I was referring to the mark III in your video, it look fine from what I saw. the video where you showed the masterchief and iron man parts in that back room

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

oh my bad. You're right.

Well, I did like that one (A LOT) but I lost motivation last year and sold those parts on here.
That I DO regret now because I was happy with that torso.
(I just figured I wasn't going to attempt it again)

I was sanding it in stages and taking my time and it was coming out very nice but life got in the way and other projects.

I'll get there again.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Your build ,with the skills you will be fantastic,I've been following your progress and I have to say I love your work! Good luck and cannot wait for more progress.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Glassed the helmet from the inside. It's nice and sturdy :)

I'm going to make a stand now so I can start sculpting.
Looking forward to that. Haven't sculpted in a while.
I need the practice.

I'm debating weather to use a different file but the proportions are really good and it's only a base. I'd rather try to put effort and put the details myself.
I'll see how it goes and decide based on how the sculpt turns out.
I dunno if I can get it movie accurate really. I"ll at least make it "mine" in a sense, if you know what I mean.

I agree only way to go, put your style into it. :thumbsup If you need the bolts for the helmet details LMK and i'll cast you up a set and send em out. ;)

Yeah man, I was mulling it over. I even asked a few people for the newer file but I think I'll just stick to this one. I'm happy with it.

also Pm sent Clinton :)

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Define "movie accurate" :) I've spent a LOT of time researching the MK III for my build. There's the ILM CGI costume. There's the costume RDJ wore (parts of). And I'm pretty sure there was a couple different versions of that costume (I've stared at so many pix that my eyes are crossed!), as I've seen variations in the hip pods, knee joints, and other details (BTW, anyone notice that "grid" where the faceplate/jaw meet is in some models and not others?).

What I'm driving at is, make it your own!

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

QFT. ;)
There's like 6 different versions if you really look and some (CGI) look very off and there would be no way a real person could wear it even if it was built. ;)

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Question for Stealth,.. When you say the last stuff you used was to weak and then resin+fibercloth is better, Are you talking about Smoothcast? I could have swore it was your video I watched talking about Smoothcast because of the "no fumes" and just as strong. I only ask because I am making a WarMachine costume for my son and was planning to get Smoothcast 321 tomorrow at the Engineer Guy here in ATL.
Has anyone else had problems with Smoothcast? Seemed like such a great idea.

I have no real intention of making it movie accurate. I don't think I really could since there are so many variations of the look of it. I'll just try my best to get it to what it's supposed to look like. I'm definitely going to try to make it my own. :)

Exactly. It looks ultra fitted to his head in proportion to the suit.

well, Its not weak if you build it up with enough coats. It's just SO TEDIOUS :(

I'm actually taking that down soon to put up another product.
I should actually take it down now.

The newer product is Epoxamite 101 (FAST) it works similar to Fiberglass resin and absorbs better into paper than the smoothcast 321 and the cloth/mat for strengthening and less hassle than slushcasting over and over to the desired strength.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Only problem with epoximite just like all epoxy resins is they have that flash cure. One second it's tack the next your hooped if your still working with it, well not quit that bad but it's fast. ;) Polyester has that gradual cure and you can control it pretty good if you get used to how much cat you use. IMO of course. :)

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

yeah, polyester resin is still highly superior. This is just another alternative because the smootcast 321 was highly sucking lol.

I try to finish coating a part before it snap cures cause you're right. It really does have that downside and it starts to gel and what not and it's pretty much done.

So you really have to use the right amount for the job. It works great with the fiberglass mat. It ends up surprisingly ridgid.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Should be stronger, it's just that flash cure and the long dry time or I'd use it or other Epoxy resin instead of polyester.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

Yeah, it's so weird. It's like 8-11 minutes pot life (I forget) and a 5-6 hours drying time.

Re: IRON MAN - Mark III Armor Build

EpoxAmite ® 101 FAST Trial Size for 25 bucks at Smooth-On,.. 11 mins pot life , 30 min work time and 5 hour dry time. Reads almost just like Smoothcast except EpoxAmite looks to be more of a liquid in the pictures. I also don't think Smoothcast came in a trial size which is a one up for Epox. Finhead, when you say polyester ,thats the fiberglass resin right? Just trying to get my mats right before I head to town.
