Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...big update can see little daylight

Wow this suits you perfectly !
I'm following your path for my mkIII, hope it will turn as good as yours !

Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...big update can see little daylight

LOL, are you using the "Funky Foam" for your build too? The stuff is great. I'm debating on using it for my entire suit instead of the foam rolls I bought.

I bought a gallon of the 65D yesterday. I'm going to finish building my arm and shoulders this weekend and try to do a complete finish (coating and paint) by next weekend.

Looks good!

For those of you questioning the toughness of the end product of this, keep in mind, you can ALSO actually fiberglass the INSIDE of these pieces with just the resin and fiberglass cloth.

Contrary to what people will have you believe, you CAN fiberglass foam. It will NOT melt. Will hopefully have a video up soon for you guys to check out.

Thanks MrBibou, n Im not even done with mk VII and a new one is already out? jeez lol Im sure yours will come out cool.
Here's my original post (with video) on plastic coating foam, although I originally used Polyurethane resin instead of Polyester resin/rondo: http://www.therpf.com/f24/how-plastic-coat-foam-costume-pieces-146539/

Thanks for helping him out :)

Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...big update torso finished with pics

Hey Doc! Love your work brother! I am actually doing a double build of War Machine and a MK3!
http://www.therpf.com/f24/foam-war-machine-gatling-gun-stronger-mount-152950/
http://www.therpf.com/f24/iron-man-mk3-build-149350/
I was wondering of you can sand the rondo? I read the entire thread but may have missed it. I assume that you are having to cut some of the details back into the piece,? I know bondo sands, but how well does the rondo sand? I appreciate any help/advice you can share!
Thanks!
M

thanks electraflier, your builds coming out awesome too. Yes you can sand it just like regular bondo and it all depends on the quality of bondo. I use premium light weight body filler or gold n its very easy to sand. Your right when its a smoothed out and before primer I do the detail work, like the lines I use my dremel n just freehand them in. Also the hard to reach stuff I use small files. I bought em at harbor freight for like 3 bucks and comes wit like 10 different shaped files. If u need any more help dont hesitate to ask dude...laterz

Doc, it has been a while since I signed on so I am just now seeing the last set of pics you posted and I gotta say I am impressed. The suit fits you very well and it is coming along nicely.

Thanks, but don't give me all the credit, lol. I know how much work it takes to turn cardstock and foam into an actual piece of wearable armor that looks good while being worn. You have done a great job so far and it is one of the best foam builds I have seen since you are smoothing all the pieces out with Rondo.

I like the chest... keep up the good work.

lol just giving credit where credit is due, couldnt of made it without ya. Thanks for the motivating comment to make my suit that much better :D

Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...small update chest coated and primered

Your suit is coming along very amazing. i have question? with the rondo method does it make it heavier on foam or is light still?

Thanks rasco, to answer your question it depends how many coats you put. I try to put only 2 coats but even with 3 itll only weigh little more than just plain foam. Cuz I use 3mm foam for everything and if it got way heavier no way that foam would hold up to the weight. So basically its still real light

Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...small update chest coated and primered

Any problems with the rondo chipping off or cracking? I'm curious exause I could see something like that happening. But dang, bro! Your suit looks amazing!
I'm still in the building phase with mine. So I'm still trying to decide what the best coating method would be.
Good luck.

Hey guys I know this may sound very "noob" of me but what is rondo exactly cause I'd love to give this a shot your suit looks amazing dude

Re: Foam Ironman Mark VII coated with rondo...small update chest coated and primered

Just read the previous pages mate, it had been ask lots of time already..

rondo = bondo + fiberglass resin
1:1 ratio
