Do the early Star Wars model ships have too many greeblies?

Besides, when you see the "classics" in Sci-Fi, you'll see that the design of spaceships differed according to the era when those movies were made.
Do you prefer the Flash Gordon look, or the Forbidden Planet look, or...well, you know what I mean, it's up to the designers and artists + the Director's to set up the feel of the world they want to portray. Who knows what will be on screen 20 years from now:unsure

We will all be flying around in big eggs. LoL

When it comes down to it, no matter how much you like it... No matter how much you'd like to defend it... It's still just a movie. I have an MPC Falcon that I want to build to some degree of accuracy, but every time I look at it, I can't help but think: "This is just too much, and almost none of it makes any sense!"

So, in closing: It may be interesting to look at. It may be cool too. But yes Virginia, Star Wars ships do have too many greeblies.[/QUOTE]

Or, maybe your just too lazy to rework it all to reach that level of accuracy? I mean, why bother to reach any level of accuracy, if you hate the fact its covered in greeblies at all, your own argument falls flat mate hahaha!

Not covered with greeblies, but have you seen the thousands upon thousands of little tiny rectangles the shuttles are covered in? At least the Falcon has larger panels!

All I gotta say is.......

Let me answer that question with another question: Does the ENTIRE craft look like that, or just the engines?

Well, the entire craft was covered with tiny panels that made it appear smooth, yes. Consider, though, that the Saturn V spacecraft had to be smooth in order to function as an effective rocket. In the Star Wars universe, they have reached a point where their craft don't need to be streamlined in order to perform atmospheric takeoff or re-entry. So imagine, then, if you took the innards of the Saturn V rocket and spread them out on the surface. You would indeed have something much more akin to the Millennium Falcon.

Yep The Millennium Falcon is as smooth as a baby's a** flying in atmosphere with it's particle deflector shields switched on (IMPO)

Actually it's surprising how much detail rockets such as the Saturn V have on them. There are several sections of vertical stringers, external instrument conduits running the length of each stage, fuel line fairings, umbilical connection ports, vents, RCS systems, hold-down posts and so on. The back end of each stage is chock-a-block with cables, fuel lines, instrument boxes, gimbal mechanisms, and so on. If you want some real 'greeblies' check out the LM, with all its irregular panels, vents, landing legs, RCS engines and communications antennae sticking out all over the place, with no need to worry about aerodynamics.

Quite enjoying this conversation. For my vote, NO, not too many Greeblies, I like them. I do prefer that they look like they have a function though and not just glued in place to fill a hole, tie them together with pipes or wires. Some of the stuff on the back of the Falcon does look kind of sloppy to me, but I know the modelers had a limited amount of time and knew the audience would not have time to see any of that.
I would love to see a fresh from the factory YT-1300 or a cleaned up version, maybe someone would take up the challenge of building that.

I think the ruff look is better. The new ships from Ep 1-3 look sleek but not interesting.

I've always wondered why the ships look worse as time goes on :p

I can't believe this thread is still going.

The short answer is NO they don't have too many greeblies. They are fictional ships where every piece on them serves some fictional purpose (explained or otherwise).

Build your models any way you like. If you want them to have ANY accuracy bite the bullet and add the greeblies.

If you want to create a more stylized, what should it have looked like in a "perfect world" - have at it... just don't post it as a replica

The many greeblies present on the SW ships and one of the things that make them so cool and impressive. They almost feel organic. I don't mind ships looking clean and shiny like UFO's, but still the irregularities on some of the SW ships are what make them so great and iconic.

That would for sure be a cool idea. Google images has a few pics of a clean one, but not very accurate looking beyond that to me.

The Haynes Millennium Falcon Service Manual has some cool technical drawings of YT's new:

.......and then theres the original concept designs of Ralph McQuarrie (reconstructed by our own SteveStarkiller).....posted this image at the beginning of this thread:

The Haynes Manual is where I found the idea of making my YT-1000, and as you can see on Jaitea's post, there are lots of other versions to build. The YT series was billed as very customizable, so anything goes, including less greeblies if you wanted.

The random scattering of little boxes everywhere, the rectangular indentations all around the edges of the hull plating, etc. It's like they were purposely avoiding straight lines & blank hull areas just on principle.

That is somewhat correct, for some models, the Jawa Crawler being a good example - the profile and hull shapes were intentionally broken up to confuse perspective. Just aesthetics, but there were also bluescreen considerations which required the ships to be very un-glossy.

Aside from that, greeblies and dirty weathering were the order of the day because Star Wars is a Western. If you want a good idea of how awful it can look when Star Wars forgets itself and relocates to the big city, just go watch Attack of the Clones, as others have suggested. :p

My 2c - while you're totally welcome to your opinion, but what you're criticising is a core part of what made Star Wars so fresh and so great. It seems like criticising Indiana Jones for using a whip when logic would suggest he should have relied on his gun far more. These things are what they are!

I really hated that they went this direction with the X-Wing. Advanced fighters isn't what the rebellion should have been flying at the time. The Y-Wing and it's many assorted incarnations fit the rag tag rebels. The things looked like they were thrown together. The X-Wing was clearly a cleaner and more advanced craft than the Y, but a rag tag group of rebels shouldn't have the most advanced tactical snub fighter built. It should have been at least a generation behind, technologically- maybe not capabillity, from the Tie.

What direction? The X-wings are old tech, they're battered and patched-up and have panels cannibalised from wrecked ships, and every sort of patchwork repair. If they were the latest formula-one racers and the Rebels had them looking that bad, that fast, they need new crew chiefs.

The Y-wings aren't less capable than the X-wings. I don't know where this stuff comes from...just watch the movie. They keep up fine with X-wings. We don't see them doing great against the TIEs but then again we really only see much of them on their attack run - where they HAVE to stay on target and rely on the ships flying cover for them.

Contrast this with the TIEs, which have aimable guns, are much newer and better maintained, etc.

Wasn't the whole point of ANH that the rebels destroyed the Empires technological marvel with ships that should have been on the scrap heap ten years before?

Correct. Just do as I do and ignore the EU. If it is in the movie, it's canon. Remember that for ten or fifteen years, the EU tried to tell us that Executor had five or nine engines, and was 5 miles long. It's crap which can be safely ignored.

In ROTJ a single Y Wing takes out 2 TIE Interceptors on the trot! After the Ties had taken an A Wing!

Y Wings are clearly bad-ass.

Hells yeah, Y wings are hardcore, X wings are a bit poncy, like comparing a small Japanese hatchback with a turbo, and a V8 muscle car hehe!
