It took a lot of hours to get these panel lines cut just right. I'm trying to be true to the Weta gun wherever possible. Speaking of which, I'm finding out that the big canister on the bottom is slightly undersized. This goes back to the start of the project when I made a 3D model of the gun based on a concept drawing instead of pictures of the real thing. You can't really tell the canister is the wrong size without comparing it closely to the reference, so I guess I'll leave it as it is.
I can't wait to paint this thing, but the weather has been non-cooperative these days.

I put the second (and hopefully the last) hand of filler on the gun today. I'll start sanding again tomorrow.
I thought some of you would like to see the space I work in so I made a few photos. This is a corner in my parents garage that's become my workshop in the last year or so. I have my lathe and my CNC router here and in the next room is my dad's carpentry workshop, so I have acces to a lot of woodworking tools. The base of my CNC is from an old wire electro erosion machine that someone donated to me. I bought a new Z axis and motors and wired everything together.

I've been spraying paint onto this thing for almost two weeks and still it wants more.
I'm using spray can paints for base colors and airbrish where I want more specific colors, like on the 24 canisters.. The targeting device and the little canisters are clear-coated and mostly finished, the gun and the big canister are lagging behind a bit.

The base color blocking on the gun is done. I'll have to dull the colors with some glass wool.
I had some problems with masking tape pulling the white coat along with spray filler from the wood.
For anyone interested in my finishing process: I sprayed the parts with acrylic spray filler thinned with nitro thinner, sanded it with 160 and 240 grit sandpaper, sprayed it again and sanded with 240 paper and with 500 grit paper on the flatter and visible areas.

Thanks. I doubt I'll be making another prop from D9 cause I'd like to pay my tributes to other movies I like. The Arc Gun would be nice to have because it's the most visible gun in the movie. Two yeas ago I decided to build the Assault rifle instead because I thought it looked better, was nice to hold and also easier to build. I've since changed my mind about the "easier to build" part. Them cannisters ...

I agree, the Arc Generator is definitely the coolest gun from the film, though that pulse gun isn't too bad either

Here's another pic in natural light. The black and orange have been rubbed with wool and now look nice and matt. I've also colored all of the panel lines black. I used a quality felt pen (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QbLq3c6EhwA/TAc8OB2JuwI/AAAAAAAAE2w/q7_N5rJS9tc/s1600/Grey.jpg) for this and it worked very well. I had a lot of control and the paint covers well. I'd probably go crazy if I had to do it with a paintbrush.
