District 9 Assault rifle finished pg. 5

Re: District 9 Assault rifle WIP

This is really fantastic. When you're done you should write "smrt za smrt" across the side!

Re: District 9 Assault rifle WIP

Any thoughts on how you will finish it? IE: what will you do to cover the wood grain?

The finishing process has been on my mind since day one, cause I've had bad experiences with grain showing through the paint on some of my other projets. I had chosen maple as the base material as it has almost invisible grain in comparison to some other woods. As I went I've been filling bigger toolmarks with wood filler (the white stuff) and sanding, but the gun has a ton of recessed areas and I can't use filler on those. One option is to spray the whole gun with spray filler upon completion and sanding, but that also involves sanding the small recessed areas, and there's a danger that the engraved lines will also get filled and become ugly. So I'm not yet sure what I'll do. It will involve sanding :)

I'd avoid using bondo (the thought crossed my mind) because it needs to be mixed as it's used and it STINKS and would be a marathon of sanding. You could try sealing it with plain ol wood glue but it would require multiple layers and lots of sanding to even begin to cover the wood grain. You could try some tests with Acrylic Gesso, it's thicker than glue. It might require more layers depending on how thick you apply it. I've never tried spray filler. You might want to build some small sanding blocks by gluing sandpaper onto some different shaped sticks. Like you said though, it will take lots of sanding.

Let us know how you finally seal it. Great work. :thumbsup

I'm just about to embark on the same project and reading your thread has inspired me so much. It's also given me lots of questions I need to ask :)
Great work by the way.

Ask away :)

I don't have a proper update this week, because I didn't get a lot done.
I did a mockup of a one of the top 24 canisters:

The ball looks a bit large to me, but that's what I've got so that's what I'll use.
I'll be making all 24 canisters individually out of PVC with a wooden ball.

Small update.

Again not much progress, cause I've started on a smaller project that'll take the next two weekends.

Thanks. The barrel is 50mm (2'') thick, it's two 15mm and two 10mm pieces.

Re: District 9 Assault rifle WIP

I've been busy making the top canisters the last two weekends.

I spent at least an hour on each one of these guys. I also have the end balls drilled, so these canisters are nearly finished.
Here's a reference for comparison:

Fantastic work !
What tool do you use for the details on wood ? Some kind of router ?
