I was comparing the screen shot from the trailer and the promo shot... why are the colors different? The trailer arc gun has orange bands.

I don't know why, but somehow Sharlto Copley reminds me of Peter Sellers....

Good eye, SithLord.

I suspect the reason they don't match is because the publicity stills may have been taken either before or after filming, rather than during filming. If so, they could have been stuck with whatever prop was available. That would also explain the odd gun in the pic where Wikus is standing next to an MNU APC. I suspect that gun is a redressed Covenant carbine from the Halo shorts, which were also done by Weta & Neil Blomkamp.

I disagree. Check out the details in those two pictures, like the flyaway ripped bit on the plastic bag over his hand, the rocks on the ground behind him, and the little curved piece of cardboard in front of him. They look identical to me! I would be very surprised to learn that these pictures weren't taken at the same time.

My guess is they just wanted the gun to be "punchier", visually, so they did a little color correction. I don't think that's a particularly difficult thing for filmmakers to do, especially since it would simply be a matter of replacing the solid gray markings with solid orange.

the middle gun is the one christopher uses when storming the building

Hm...and that would only need a bit of desaturation! You're right, that does seem more likely.

Plus, looking at the high res version of that picture, there's still some orange kick on the spiked "barrel" part of the gun, and the orange sections are roughly cut out for the desaturated.
