A lot of gold in here

Anyone doing a dirty ANH 3po?
I did snag two with this in mind. I'm thinking about repainting/ rewiring the inside of one to leave displayed "naked" and weathering the coverings of that one. Then, depending on how I feel, I can display the other one next to the TPM version with the clean or weathered coverings by swapping them out. I may try and copy the paint job of the ROTJ 3po head that Adam Savage covered on Tested eight months ago, I like that look and his video is a great reference.

I’m going to have to look up what Adam did

I forgot what they used on the original suit to weather him up..

I was under the impression they covered him in weathering because they had such a hard time keeping the reflection of the camera off him

Regarding power, you could always get a very slim power bank and just sit it on top of that, but yeah theres gotta be a way to route a USB-C to a lithium Ion battery and stick it in the base somehow.

I was playing around with alternatives to power. It seems like there is no problem using a power bank to get the lights in the eyes to glow. But the only way to get the voice to work is to use a dedicated ac adapter. I even tried a usb-c to usb-c cord connection to my MagSafe powerbank and that failed to get the voice to operate.

Even get the ac adapter that are outlet/usb hybrids to work the voice is problematic. For what I have, the type with only one ac outlet and usb ports work at both 2.1a and 1a, but the type with two ac outlets, none of the usb ports work.

Oh weird, I guess it needs more constant power or something for the speaker?

Regarding weathering, i saw a post on Instagram where someone did a really good job using elmers glue that you them rub off in random patches to get that dulled look. Is that a common known method for 3PO's?

That sounds amazingly simple and reversable

That smacks of amperage needs. Many of the splitters and chargers will claim to provide 2 or 3 but not consistently but a straight to plug dedicated single line usually provides what it says. The "smartchargers" are not consistent but might work because the "smart" part is just it using more than 5v when allowed. It is tricky to get a real output without monitoring it on an actual meter. A high power 5v charger is not always just an increase in amps but usually also an increase in voltage. This voice module may contain larger capacitors which require higher amperage to keep them charged after they discharge. This is going to be the case with many usb items in the future. 5v is not a lot, so it has to make up for it in amps. Amps cause serious overheating so normal chargers will only last so long and battery packs may actually be pushed dangerously to overheating due to a rapid discharge rate. Maybe someone with one of these heads and a dedicated power supply can meter both the actual volt flow and the amperage during use of vocal module?

Thank you for the heads up. I really appreciate it.

I have seen a couple of other people use the Elmer's glue technique years ago. Yeah, it seems to be a known method.

I've thought about doing it to my C3PO a long time ago, but I kind of prefer the super shiny clean look.

New Legacy Lightsaber coming: AOTC Anakin.
Exclusive to the UK Disney Store right now, but it's assumed it'll be coming to GE soon

Theyre doing a 30% sale off all lightsabers right now on the US site, so theyre probably waiting until thats over to add a new one.

I plugged my 3PO into the bank I use for my Haslab proton pack and the voice worked.

Even though 5v 2amp seems awfully low, I would put money on it being a lot more consistently 2amp and above due to being a battery pack vs a converter. The truth is that most usb converters just openly lie about their output. This is great news for anyone wanting to run this as portable or wireless. Great post.
