Disney says no more R rated Marvel movies

If there's anything I took away from Deadpool it's that tone can play a huge role in appealing to an audience. And like everything else, doing the same thing over and over again can get repetitious. The solution isn't simply making a film rated R. It can work by doing the opposite. I'm still waiting for Marvel to make a more family friendly movie that doesn't necessitate moments specifically designed to give a film a PG-13 rating. Cripes, Kevin Feige is constantly patting himself on the back for referencing The Empire Strikes Back by having bodily dismemberments in all of his Phase 2 movies and shows. There are plenty of good Marvel stories out there that don't involve our heroes finding ways of killing the bad guy.

I think what we need to take away from this is this: The Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least the film side/TV, not so much the Netflix side), is considered family fare. Putting out Rated R movies would not fit in with that. We might get darker stuff for the Netflix side of things, but not for the "main" movie line, which they want to keep family friendly.

Why would Disney consider it? Their PG-13 MCU films are the genre leader with box office performance to match, and both adults and kids will go to watch them. Marvel has their Netflix shows for the more mature audience, and those shows would probably get an R rating if they were MPAA rated. Fox on the other hand has figured out their niche for Marvel films, with more adult-oriented content. Comparatively the X-films have for the most part been drama films with limited action scenes, and with Deadpool, Fox is now aging up even further. Disney and Marvel Studios are pretty content with their place in the market (it's easily the biggest piece of the pie), and Fox can carve out their own slice. It's a smart play for Fox because a lot of comic fans are now older and this lets Disney and WB duke it out for the PG market, assuming of course that Fox can avoid more stinkers like FF :lol
