Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

I'm on the fence about this.

But, there is one positive thing I can say - Mark Hamill is the perfect age to be the head of the Jedi High Council.

Also, I agree with the idea for them to make films based on the Old Republic Era. I wanna see Darth Revan, and the True Sith Empire in a movie! I think having more SW films connected to the originals is just going to further anger the fan base.

Lets just pray to Odin that Disney may pull something out of their hats. I mean, they let Marvel studios do their own thing, right? Just look at the Avengers... holy crap.

Now this is a day or so old and more information is available I hope everyone is getting a reasonably balanced perspective on this. Lets break it down a bit.
Firstly, the deal is being seen as a great fit for both businesses, infact Lucasfilm is being seen as a great buy. Starwars as a franchise alone has brought in $27 BILLION, of which toys and merchandising alone was roughly half of that. Thats a hell of a cash cow to want to screw up managing in any major silly way. Which is why Lucasfilm has been set up to run without George leading it anymore. Disney have learnt to leave alone and let the people that love their businesses run them like that.
Argueably George has done the same, he likes to operate away from the pressure. He has put a board structure in that know how to run the business and the partnership with Disney guarantees effects work for ILM for decades. That's great business management and common sense.Plus he is nearly seventy, he wants to continue and concentrate on doing REALLY beneficial things for people in the real world and enjoy life, rather than get endlessly critisised for failing to meet peoples expectations. God knows he tried ,failed in some regards and now he deserves everything he's worked so hard for and protected the future of his company.
Secondly ,by taking the franchise forward the next trilogy will bear more of a closer resemblance to the original stories. So all the related characters, themes and designs will be far nearer to what the original fans expected to get in the prequels. PLUS, there are a huge number of younger directors who adored the originals as much as we did, who are just dying to get a crack at the next three. How good is that? Very good indeed. ESB was probably the best SW movie of all because it was directed by somebody who wasn't afraid to put his stamp on it with George only advising in the background. The result was far ahead of anyones expectations in a sequel and I can remember the same agonizing then by fans as to whether it would be any better than SW. And it was by a big margin .
Thirdly, the potential in the new series is just phenominal. Look at how many stand alone stories could be written that could be just totally satifying by themselves. Think Bond (and I've just seen the very best one ever as far as I'm concerned), think of the variations of heores and villians in the Marvel universe (but obviously with new Jedi and alien characters). It really ,really is a very rich seam of creative choices to mine.
And then consider this. In the three plus decades since Starwars was created there has not been a single decent sci fi movie series to match or compete with it, despite the weaknesses of the prequels. Nobody, not a single studio or director has come close to imitating its success as a brand that is so universely loved (as with the originals) and loathed (the prequels) yet still manages to pull in tremendous boxoffice (with one obvious exception starting with ST and look how that reboot did).
Thats why Disney bought the franchise. Thats why George has done the very best thing that he could and thats why yesterdays news was possibly one of the most positive things that I could ever have imagined having happened to the series.
As for Disney smacking up the replica prop producers, well its doubtful after thirty years that there is much more money they could make from high end product taken from the originals. They've been all been done and its of very limited appeal. The real bulk volume market is in the kids toys and merchandising. The prop makers are only going to get smacked if they go for the brand new stuff in bulk, or if efx has a contract to produce high spec models again.
But as most ships will be computer rendered instead of kit bashed models , Studio Scale wil not really effected or applicable. Thats what happened with the ships from the prequels.

Hm...

I wonder about it... Wasn't his opinion about filmbusiness that he loves to be independent from a big studio and can work on his own, and now that?!?

Well, we'll see...

But I love to see the classic Star Wars Trilogy with Live Action Disney characters... That would be awesome... And yes, it has to be lice action, no CGI or cartoon... Please the figures with moveless mouths... :lol

Geez... 21 pages already? I need to do a little bit of reading before I post my opinion on the subject. Be back later. :facepalm

Gotta say though. I was good with the whole "no more Star Wars movies" thing.

Same here.

And honestly, SW doesn't interest me much without Vader. The coolness/mystery of him is what enthralled me as a kid in the first place and kept me interested all these years.

What scares me about Disney taking over the franchise is that they will just keep on cranking out toy selling movies that will douse whatever spark of magic is left in the whole SW universe at this point.

But I'm sure they'll make a ton of money doing it.

Alright guys, here's what I have been able to surmise regarding the future of the Star Wars films from all of the recent news and current situation.

Along with Lucasfilm, Disney purchased detailed treatments from George. This much was said in the conference call with the stockholders and corroborates with what George stated in the first interview with Kathleen Kennedy.

So, Disney will be using George's original treatments or stories as the basis for the sequels.

We also know that the writers are still working; I think it is safe to assume that there will be some changes to George's original story and possibly some small nods to EU characters, settings, etc.

Now, taking into account the conversation Mark and George had in 1976 documented by J.W.Rinzler, Luke Skywalker was to play a secondary role or make a cameo appearance in the sequel trilogy.

If it is any consolation, earlier this year at Celebration VI when Mark was asked about reprising his role as Luke, responded positively with interest.

Similarly, the same question was asked to Carrie Fisher at Celebration and she also responded in kind.

There were also some reports of George meeting privately with some of the stars of the previous films for unknown reasons earlier this year. (Did this meeting have anything to do with these new developments, even in an innocuous way?) Edit: this has already been confirmed by EW in an interview with Mark.

We know that Disney and Lucasfilm have been in negotiations about the recent merger for at least a year and half and just recently went ahead with the acquisition.

It has been stated that after the new sequel trilogy, there will be a new Star Wars feature film every 2-3 years.

There have been rumors that these feature films after the sequel trilogy would be spin-offs featuring individual characters, similar to Marvel's approach to the Avengers objective.

It is also interesting to note that the new 3D releases of the previous films will lead up to the release of Episode VII in 2015. This obviously smacks of a strategy in the works for some time now that has been conveniently taken off of the shelf recently.

I guess we will have stay tuned until 2015.

Even so, it's a great time to be a Star Wars fan and I look forward with great interest to seeing more Star Wars in the future.

I'm at work and can't read all 22 pages. Has anything been said about what happens to all the props, models, costumes and such in storage?

Saw that... Interesting read for sure. And while I have mixed feelings about Damon, he is such a huge fan that it is not surprising for him to want to be involved.

I find this hard to believe. Pretty sure LFL owns it all. Seem to recall Lucas going to them and buying back Star Wars at one point.

Perhaps they own any theatrical release options like 3D. But DVD release is whole different thing.

LFL owns it all. I seem to remember years ago reading that their was a clause in his contract that said if Fox was sold all rights reverted back to him. So George ended up getting SW back when Murdoch bought Fox.

I'm just stoked that one day i'll finally get to see Disney's Star Wars on Ice in the Americas!

I remember years ago there were intl' pics of Star Wars on ice that never came here.

Vader and Luke dueling on ice would be epic. And not to mention a speed-skating wampa.

Didn't we see that on Robot Chicken?:lol

I don't know about anyone else, but the EW article seems to say this has been in the planning quite a while. According to Mark Hamill, George told him and Carrie 'last august' they planned to do 7-9. I don't about most people, but if I say last august right now, i'm talking about august 2011. If true, the decision was made prior to that and he's had almost 18 months to work out a story.
