Disney buying Lucasfilm (new Star Wars movies on tap)

So...how's progress on that time travel technology these days? Wouldn't mind taking a trip back to about 1990 or so.

Boy, you know, I'm still trying to get over the fact that we're talking about a new Trilogy... what are we going to call this? The Third Trilogy? The Disney Trilogy? OT, PT, DT?

I was seven when TPM came out. Seven. I didn't really know Star Wars well at all; I think I might've seen ESB once, or something. I can remember the Anakin posters with the shadow of Vader on the sand, and that's really all I remember. I was too young. The podrace was really what I took away from TPM, that and the double-ended lightsaber. We all thought Maul was so cool, but my favorite was the Naboo Starfighter. I played the old Battle for Naboo game on the N64 - anyone remember that? What a great game... I loved that starfighter - the Naboo N-1 Starfighter. We didn't know that Jar Jar was awful. We didn't know that there was no plot. We just thought it was cool.

I remember the craze around Attack of the Clones, and how people were giving their own theories at school. It was cool to be a fan, in fifth grade. We all thought Episode II was the bomb, with the big war scenes at the end, and I was absolutely in love with the LAAT/i Gunship. I drew that thing on everything, but I could never quite get the geometry right; the wings always looked wonky, or something. I had Zam Wesell's speeder model, you know, the one with the deformable nose cones? I thought the lightsaber stuff was fun - a purple lightsaber? Canon-shattering? Never! Cool! but the LAAT/i was always my favorite. It was probably AOTC, sad to say, that got me into Star Wars. I was the right age - ten - and I could understand enough of the movie politics (the TPM stuff was way over my head, and a lot of it is like, "Why is this in a kid's movie?") to follow the story.

When ROTS came out in '05, I remember all the speculation about it. We knew Anakin had to get injured; we knew Padmé had to die, we knew that the Clones had to become Stormtroopers, and we knew the Jedi Order had to go away. Seems obvious, when you think about it; Order 66 was what had to happen. I was actually up at scout camp when ROTS came out, and I made it through the whole weekend without any spoilers. Anyway, I saw ROTS in theaters like four times with my pals, and we just loved all the lightsaber combat. We didn't know the Vader suit was wrong, and we didn't know that Portman's character acting was getting progressively worse. We were just happy to see the "end" of Star Wars.

Star Wars was really my childhood, at least the PT. I can even look back on it kindly, when I think about how I felt about the films when they came out. Sure, in hindsight, to an adult's eye, the films aren't up to the OT; not even close, but to a kid, they were Star Wars - and how could you complain about that? Gunships shooting up Hailfire Droids, Yoda using a lightsaber, the Clones flying into space combat... we just loved every minute of it. We didn't know fans would be fighting about the minor details years later - Yoda should NEVER use a lightsaber!!!1!!1 - and we just enjoyed it. That's what it was for. That's something we've lost.

Think about it. We actually get to sit down and watch a new Star Wars movie without knowing who that guy with the funny ears is, or what his life story is, or what color his lightsaber is. We get to be curious; we get to experience something new and fresh. We get to speculate again, instead of reworking old theories to make the PT fit with the OT. We get to watch a Star Wars movie without knowing what's coming next. We don't even know who's going to live, if we have a new cast (which I'd expect) - something we really haven't even seen since ROTJ, long before I was born. We knew Anakin was going to get hurt, but live. We knew Padmé had to die. We knew Obi-Wan had to live. This opens up a whole new chapter in the story, and hey, if you don't like it, you can always ignore it like the PT. Sure, seven years from now - it's been that long since ROTS already, if you can believe it - we might be jaded and list off all the things we hate about the DT, but for right now, I'm just going to enjoy the speculation.

Your lightsabers, too, take on new meaning. In the new films, we'll see stuff we've never seen before, not since this hobby was in its infancy. Remember when TOR came out, all the rush to build that new lightsaber from the trailer? The TFU hilts? Now, it's not going to be a race to build the one lightsaber - it's going to be the first to build that one guy with the purple face's lightsaber, or the Wookie Jedi's lightsaber, or even that lightwhip. We don't know what to expect, at all - the lightsaber hobby just got 50% bigger. Think about that, for a few seconds. There were a grand total of four unique hilts in the OT, not counting variants. How many more were in the PT? Dozens of new designs, several of which were featured on camera. Think about the new hilts, the new capabilities, even the new light-weapon ideas! Who knows what to expect? A light-foil? A light-axe? A light-claymore? This is super exciting for the hobby; this is going to literally redefine the hobby as we know it.

When the PT ended in 2005, I was thirteen. Now, I'm 20, turning 21 in a month - old enough to experience the whole thing this time, instead of through the hazy lens of memory. I'm going to enjoy every minute of the buildup, avoiding spoilers where I can, and finally, we can go into the theaters and watch Episode VII - crazy, isn't it? - we can expect it to end on a cliff-hanger/triumph, like every other first act film. Then we get to go home, draw the new ships on every spare scrap of paper, and wonder when the wizards at Fx-Sabers are going to put together a replica of that new three-bladed lightsaber. There's a new Star Wars story, fellas - and we get to enjoy the whole process again. It might even be as good as the Original Trilogy - just think about that.

Okay granted I did not read all 16 pages of this thread, but has anyone else commented on the fact that Disney now own Indiana Jones?

I hope we don't get a Twilight remake!

:lol nice Photoshop. Although it would've been more convincing if we couldn't see your taskbar with PS open :behave

Cheers,

You know, everyone is fixating on how quick fire the Disney lawyers are, while forgetting that the RPF has been awash with Iron Man helmets and suits for quite some time now...

Totally agreed here. I think there is some undue worry about SW replicas vis garage makers etc. Besides Iron man, that goes for many others too, like Rocketeer, POTC, National Treasure, etc etc etc.

Just don't mess with their mouse :lol
